About The Position

The Director of Generative Design & Optimization will lead the scientific execution of Lilly’s de novo biotherapeutic design capabilities at the Lilly Biotechnology Center in San Diego. The role transforms foundation-model outputs into experimentally testable therapeutic candidates, overseeing design generation, conditioning, sampling, scoring, optimization, and sequence selection. The director works closely with the Generative Foundation Models and Active Learning & Design Validation teams to define and execute technical strategy for AI-enabled biotherapeutic discovery. The position leads a team of AI researchers and computational scientists while providing hands-on scientific direction. Its work supports an integrated design platform combining AI/ML, protein engineering, automation, structural biology, and high-throughput experimentation to generate and optimize therapeutic antibodies and other biotherapeutics. The platform uses experimental validation in a continuous learning cycle, with dedicated computing capacity on LillyPod.
