Director, Full-Stack Engineer

BNY Mellon•New York, NY

About The Position

BNY is seeking an engineer who amplifies team impact through technical leadership and force-multiplier behaviors. The role elevates engineering standards, accelerates delivery, applies sound technical judgment to complex problems, provides thought leadership, and coaches others. The engineer uses AI-enabled capabilities to improve how work gets done while ensuring shipped solutions are secure, scalable, resilient, and worth building. The position is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The role combines hands-on full-stack engineering with architecture and team leadership. It involves designing and building fit-for-purpose architectures, simplifying systems and workflows, creating reusable patterns and tooling, and applying strong engineering fundamentals across software design, data, testing, and distributed systems. AI tools are used deliberately across design, coding, testing, review, and documentation, with human accountability for high-risk decisions, verification, and quality. Production software is developed with a reliability-first approach, including secure coding, observability, testing, disciplined rollout and rollback, and attention to resiliency, performance, scalability, and operability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 14+ years of professional software development experience, with demonstrated depth in full-stack engineering and system or application architecture.
  • Strong proficiency in Java, Spring Boot, SQL, and designing RESTful and streaming-based APIs.
  • Hands-on experience delivering cloud-native solutions, including microservices, containerization, and modern deployment patterns.
  • Working knowledge of NoSQL and distributed data stores, including selecting and applying them appropriately at scale.
  • Experience leveraging AI-enabled capabilities, including GenAI or ML-driven services, to improve developer productivity, system intelligence, or customer outcomes.
  • Pragmatic understanding of responsible AI use, scalability, and integration into enterprise platforms.

Nice To Haves

  • An advanced degree.
  • Prior experience in securities, financial services, or modern engineering-first organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Build trust, share credit, and strengthen cross-functional execution.
  • Design and build fit-for-purpose architectures that balance simplicity, quality, scale, and security.
  • Simplify systems and workflows by removing friction, toil, and unnecessary handoffs.
  • Create durable, reusable patterns, guardrails, and tooling that accelerate team delivery.
  • Adapt quickly to new domains, technologies, and problem spaces as needs evolve.
  • Apply engineering fundamentals across software design, data, testing, and distributed systems.
  • Use AI-enabled tools deliberately across design, coding, testing, review, and documentation while maintaining human accountability for high-risk decisions, verification, and final quality.
  • Build software with a reliability-first mindset, incorporating secure coding practices, observability, testing, and disciplined rollout and rollback strategies.
  • Ensure production systems meet required levels of resiliency, performance, scalability, and operability.
