About The Position

The Director of Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) will lead the financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and strategic financial analysis functions for the YMCA of Metro Chicago, a mission-driven nonprofit organization with approximately $90M in annual operating revenue. This role partners closely with executive leadership and operational leaders to provide insights that support financial sustainability, mission impact, and strategic decision-making across the organization’s programs, membership services, and community initiatives. The Director will oversee the annual budgeting process, develop long-term financial models, conduct business case and cost-benefit analysis for existing and future projects, and drive financial transparency and accountability across the organization. This role will also manage one FP&A Analyst and help build scalable financial planning processes that support organizational growth and program impact.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field.
  • 8–10+ years of progressive experience in financial planning & analysis, corporate finance, or nonprofit finance.
  • Experience leading organizational budgeting and forecasting processes.
  • Strong financial modeling and analytical skills.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Experience managing or mentoring finance staff.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the annual operating budget process for a $90M multi-program nonprofit organization, working collaboratively with department and program leaders.
  • Develop monthly and quarterly budgetary forecasts, identifying key financial risks and opportunities.
  • Develop short- and long-term liquidity forecasts.
  • Build and maintain long-term financial models that support strategic initiatives, capital planning, and program expansion.
  • Evaluate financial performance across program areas, branches, and administrative functions.
  • Produce monthly financial reporting packages for executive leadership and the Board of Directors.
  • Analyze variances between actual results, budget, and forecast, providing actionable insights and recommendations.
  • Develop KPIs, dashboards, and operational metrics that link financial performance to program impact.
  • Support leadership with scenario modeling and decision support related to program investments, pricing, and cost structure.
  • Serve as a strategic finance partner to executive leadership and operational teams.
  • Provide financial guidance on new initiatives, grants, partnerships, and program expansions.
  • Help align financial planning with the organization’s mission and strategic priorities.
  • Enhance and streamline budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting processes.
  • Improve financial data integrity, automation, and reporting capabilities.
  • Collaborate with Accounting to ensure alignment between financial planning and financial reporting. Team Leadership
  • Manage and mentor one FP&A Analyst, providing coaching and professional development.
  • Foster a culture of analytical rigor, collaboration, and service across the finance function.
  • Reporting any items that may provide a health or safety hazard to staff, members or guests to your supervisor
  • Following all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to the monitoring and supervision of children
  • Reporting any suspicious behavior and violation of policy and procedures to your supervisor
  • Completing all child abuse prevention training as required
