About The Position

Reporting to the Chief Business Officer, the Director, Foundation Accounting has responsibility for the integrity, accuracy, and informational quality of the overall finance functions for the Tyler Junior College Foundation in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Procedures (GAAP) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Responsibilities include all fiscal period close processes, financial reporting, financial systems maintenance, internal controls and regulatory compliance procedures, and tax reporting. This position is also responsible for all accounting, reporting, and due diligence work on the endowment pool. Furthermore, the position will also lead activities supporting budgeting/forecasting and variance analyses. This highly-skilled individual is expected to manage the accounting department towards efficient and value-added processes, and interact effectively with all levels of the Foundation and Tyler Junior College. This position supervises the Foundation Accountant and occasional student workers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, finance, accounting, or a related field
  • Five years of directly related accounting experience
  • Broad knowledge of general accounting principles, practices, and procedures.
  • At least one year of supervisory experience.
  • Certified Public Accountant

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree in business, finance, or accounting
  • Five to eight years of accounting experience, preferably in higher education or non-profit organizations
  • Experience with college/university or governmental accounting.
  • Experience with an Enterprise Resource Planning System, such as Banner or PeopleSoft
  • Experience with Foundation/Advancement-related systems such as Raisers Edge

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain accounting controls, processes and procedures to ensure effectiveness, accuracy and timeliness of Foundation accounting and reporting, in accordance with generally accepted accounting practices.
  • Perform, review and analyze a broad range of complex accounting and fiscal activities to ensure compliance with policy and appropriate accounting treatment of Foundation transactions
  • Oversee all accounting functions and related systems , including training of staff, implementation of periodic upgrades and modifications, and recommending system improvements, as needed.
  • Responsible for producing timely, accurate, and GAAP-compliant financial statements that properly reflect donor and non-donor restricted assets and net assets utilizing a fund accounting methodology.
  • Prepare all Foundation financial reports, as requested, for the Foundation Board, Executive, and Investment Committee meeting.
  • Attend periodic Foundation Board and Committee meetings , as requested, to report on Foundation financial matters.
  • Prepare all analyses and reports , including investment and scholarship reports, as well as provide Foundation accounting information for the annual Foundation and Advancement survey, and other ad hoc requests.
  • Prepare and monitor the Foundation budget , reports on scholarship spend, investment returns, and other activities to ensure responsible utilization of financial resources and monitor expendable fund balances .
  • Oversee the Foundation’s annual financial statement audit, including preparation of all financial statements and supporting workpapers, as well as schedules to support the annual IRS Form 990.
  • Ensure all required Foundation financial documents and regulatory reports are timely filed and publicly posted.
  • Work with the Offices of Advancement and Alumni Relations on accounting matters and in preparing the annual endowment stewardship reports and all benchmarking reporting.
  • Act as the primary liaison with all third-party vendors providing support and reporting services to the Foundation .
  • Supervise and develop Foundation accounting staff, establish priorities, and ensure staff is completing required functions and developing their technical and professional skills.
  • Represent the Foundation at various campus and community events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Business Officer and the Vice President for Institutional Advancement/Executive Director, Foundation .
