About The Position

The School of Medicine (SOM) is seeking an experienced, dynamic individual for the position of Director of Financial Aid. The Director supports the School of Medicine’s mission to foster the success and financial wellbeing of our medical students. The Director serves as the leadership of the SOM Financial Aid Office (SOM FAO), in the areas of federal loan aid, loan repayment advising, scholarships, financial aid counseling, Financial Wellness (Financial Literacy) programing, and office management. Reports to the SOM Associate Dean for Student Affairs. This position will oversee the management of SOM Scholarships, of one of the largest Departmental accounts in the University. The scope of scholarship responsibilities includes the following: data analysis, financial account monitoring, award posting, fiscal scholarship funding projections, scholarship tracking, stewardship, donor contact, scholarship application, Scholarship Committee member, all scholarship reports for SOM Administration, LCME, Development, and Stewardship Offices. The Director provides high-level oversight, supervision, office guidance, and administration to manage federal loan programs for MD professional students in accordance with all applicable federal Dept. of Ed. and DHHS regulations, institutional regulations, and/or guidelines. The scope of office activities include, but are not limited to, office management, awarding, disbursement, tracking federal loan limits, loan counseling, debt management, loan forgiveness advising, problem resolution, communications, publications, website, presentations, federal AOR’s for DHHS, financial literacy programing and compliance. The Director supervises and participates in counseling medical students in all areas of financial aid such as: application, federal loans, debt management, institutional aid, loan promissory notes, repayment, credit and more. Manages, creates and presents federally required loan entrance and exit counseling for professional medical students with high levels of student loan debt. Provide expert loan repayment advising and individualized planning for graduating medical students. The Director is responsible for SOM federal and institutional reporting and specific LCME accreditation elements and reports. This role encompasses advanced expertise in federal grants administration (e.g. HRSA), interprets federal regulations to monitor and maintain compliance, evaluates and develops Policies & Procedures, and serves as a resource to the campus community and external agencies regarding all aspects of the SOM FAO.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a related field and six (6) years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficient in knowledge of federal student loans.
  • Able to understand and communicate complex options for consolidation, loan repayment and loan forgiveness programs for medical students.
  • Organized, task oriented, ability to delegate and follow-up.
  • Ability to think through complex issues and identify appropriate options and solutions.
  • Responsive, courteous, accurate.
  • Ability to work with others, assist others, take directions from others in the interest of moving process and programs forward to the desired outcome.
  • Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • High level proficiency in public speaking and presentation skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Five or more years of experience in financial aid administration in a professional/graduate school setting.
  • Demonstrated success in managing federal compliance, grant funding and donor- funded accounts.
  • Oracle/PeopleSoft experience.
  • Scholarship management experience.
  • Financial Literacy knowledge in areas of credit, loans, budgeting.
  • Strategic Vision- ability to align financial aid strategy with SOM’s mission to reduce student debt and improve outcomes.
  • Adaptability-review current procedures and recommend new objectives, evaluate new approaches and assess changing conditions.
