Director, Federal Policy

Axon•Columbia, WA

About The Position

Axon is seeking a Director of Federal Policy to lead coordinated federal engagement and position the company as a trusted technology partner for key agencies. The role develops and owns a multi-year government affairs strategy across the executive branch and relevant Congressional committees, connecting policy work to Axon’s mission and business results. It is an individual-contributor position based within the legal organization, embedded with the business, and working frequently with Axon’s executive team. The role leads through expertise, relationships, and influence rather than direct reports. The Director will map Axon’s federal relationships and engagement assets, coordinate internal teams and external advisors, cultivate relationships with senior officials and Congressional staff, and monitor policy developments. The position also represents Axon at federal conferences and stakeholder forums, communicates actionable intelligence to decision-makers, and reports progress to leadership. Federal engagement must meet high ethical and compliance standards.

Requirements

  • Approximately 10 or more years of relevant experience.
  • Track record in public service across senior staff, government affairs, or policy roles.
  • Meaningful experience as staff, counsel, or legislative aide on the House or Senate Homeland Security, Judiciary, or Armed Services Committees, or equivalent executive branch roles at DOJ or DHS.
  • Demonstrated experience running Hill strategies, passing bills, or influencing policy.
  • Ability to build bipartisan, bicameral coalitions to achieve business-relevant outcomes.
  • Fluency in federal law enforcement culture, priorities, and operational realities, including how agencies evaluate and adopt technology.
  • Ability to set strategy, generate ideas, anticipate developments, and identify opportunities.
  • Bias toward action and measurable outcomes.
  • Strong relationship-mapping, coordination, and stakeholder-connection skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and own a multi-year federal government affairs strategy across the executive branch and relevant Congressional committees.
  • Audit and map Axon’s federal relationships, including internal champions, external advisors, agency allies, Hill contacts, and third-party partners; identify assets and gaps.
  • Coordinate legal, communications, product, sales, and executive teams to ensure unified, strategic, and non-duplicative policy engagement.
  • Build and maintain relationships with senior officials, Congressional staff, and relevant organizations.
  • Apply knowledge of law enforcement technology adoption and policy affecting the law enforcement community.
  • Ensure federal engagement meets high ethical and compliance standards.
  • Manage and coordinate external government affairs firms and advisors, ensuring alignment and accountability.
  • Monitor legislative, regulatory, and executive branch developments relevant to Axon and translate them into actionable intelligence for internal decision-makers.
  • Represent Axon at federal conferences, industry forums, and stakeholder meetings.
  • Connect federal engagement to mission and business results, including policy wins and agency adoption, and report progress to leadership.
