About The Position

Join our team to lead the planning, design, and delivery of projects ranging from urgent work orders to $100M+ capital initiatives that shape the future of Mayo Clinic’s campuses and patient experience. This role sits at the intersection of strategy and execution—blending visionary, human-centered design with the operational realities of complex clinical environments. As a leader within Planning & Design, you will mentor a high-performing team and guide projects through every phase—from programming and approvals through design, construction, and occupancy—while providing clear, executive-level communication and translating complex tradeoffs for senior leaders and clinical partners. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture or related field with 15+ years of post‑academic experience in healthcare planning, design, and construction; or master’s degree with 12+ years of comparable experience
  • Director must be licensed as a Professional Engineer, Architect or other similar licensure relating to Facilities Design and Construction.
  • Extensive experience leading healthcare design and construction phases, including estimating, contracts, construction documentation, and multiple project delivery methods
  • Strong working knowledge of codes, regulations, and compliance requirements applicable to healthcare facilities
  • Qualified applicants will submit a resume, which includes a 1-5 page list/summary of healthcare related projects.
  • Fifteen years of related healthcare design experience is required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide end‑to‑end leadership for multiple planning and design projects simultaneously, from early programming through construction and occupancy, with accountability for scope, cost, schedule, quality, and stakeholder alignment
  • Serve as the professional registrant of record for Mayo Clinic, with accountability for code compliance across all facilities projects, whether delivered by internal teams or external partners
  • Partner closely with the Director of Facilities Project Management, administrative leaders, clinicians, and user groups to ensure functional, operational, and experience‑driven design outcomes
  • Build and lead multidisciplinary teams of internal staff, consultants, and contractors; make timely, well‑reasoned decisions that balance design intent, operational needs, risk, and cost
  • Establish and evolve standards, policies, procedures, and continuous quality initiatives for assigned planning and design groups
  • Oversee financial performance, contracts, and vendor partnerships to ensure alignment with institutional goals and high‑quality service delivery
  • Communicate project progress, risks, and tradeoffs clearly to executive leadership and key stakeholders
