The Hospital Facility Management (FM) Department plays a critical role in this mission by providing essential infrastructure and operational support across 2.1 million square feet of the Palo Alto campus —home to a Level 1 Trauma Center and leading academic medical center. The Director of Facility Management provides strategic and operational leadership to advance a safe, reliable, and healing environment of care. This role partners closely with Facilities Construction, Engineering, and clinical and operational leaders to ensure seamless coordination, proactive communication, and effective mitigation strategies that protect clinical operations and patient care continuity. The Director leads high ‑impact initiatives that enhance the patient and staff experience, including Patient Room Optimization, Facility Modernization and Refresh programs, and supports critical Environment of Care and Fire/Life/Safety programs. Through disciplined execution and cross ‑functional collaboration, this role drives improvements that strengthen reliability, safety, and the overall healing environment. The Facilities Services division enhances health through leadership, collaboration, and innovation. Our team offers essential non-clinical support 24/7, ensuring safe operations and planning for future needs. We represent the intersection of planning, construction, general services, and facilities operations. The Hospitality Services business unit enhances patient, staff, and visitor experience through exceptional service. This team includes food services, environmental services, facility management, and patient transport & equipment management, all focused on creating a safe and welcoming environment that promotes healing and well-being. Facilities Management (FM) provides essential facilities infrastructure support for 2.1 million square feet of the Stanford Health Care Palo Alto campus, a Level 1 Trauma and Academic Medical Center. The department leads facility projects that enhance the Environment of Care for patients and serves as the liaison between construction project managers and operational stakeholders. Through proactive planning, the department maintains operational continuity and safeguards patient safety. The Director – Facilities Management is responsible for the oversight and allocation of resources for the management of property & facilities building portfolio of Stanford Health Care (SHC) and other Stanford Medicine entities in shared service agreements within the Facilities Services division at SHC. With strong focus in leadership, operations management, standard work and stakeholder management, this critical role serves as a key advisor to Facilities Services senior leadership to ensure property facilities management supports the overall SHC strategic plan while meeting the business objectives of the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a work-related discipline/field from an accredited college or university
  • Seven (7) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience.
  • Knowledge of project management methodologies to lead project teams; write in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Working knowledge and experience with The Joint Commission (TJC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI)
  • Understands extremely complex verbal or written instructions.
  • Must be well organized and systematic in work processes, possess excellent communication and collaboration skills; ability to multi-task and handle multiple priorities while managing aggressive deadlines.
  • Ability to delegate assignments and share decision-making with team members as appropriate.
  • Must have strong leadership skills and be able to lead project teams, exercising strong interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Sets vision for and leads the management of the Facilities Management department at the Palo Alto hospital campus or the Property Facilities Management department at regional campuses and oversees all operational aspects of property / facilities management in a manner which protects, maintains and improves the value of the facilities.
  • Responsible for the environment of care and all of its major components: life safety, safety, security, hazardous materials and waste, emergency preparedness, medical equipment and utility systems.
  • Participates in strategic planning for facility reconfiguration and changes.
  • Directs and assures the efficient operation of day-to-day activities of the department, including hiring and development of staff.
  • Ensures competency of all staff.
  • Leads performance improvement activities within the department and participates in C-I-Care and other enterprise-wide activities.
  • Applies tools and techniques to continually improve the patient, provider and staff experience by providing and maintaining healthy, safe and appealing environments in a sustainable manner.
  • Develops, prepares and executes long range and annual strategic plans, budgets, business continuity, and assures compliance.
  • Develops and maintains department and enterprise policies and procedures, managing internal/external cross-functional project teams.
  • Leads interdisciplinary approaches to enterprise-generated and facility-centered initiatives.
  • Facilitates effective communication among staff, physicians, patients, families and ancillary departments.
  • Builds, develops and grows business relationships with stakeholders and vendors.
  • Partners and coordinates with appropriate departments concerning facility maintenance and construction projects, communicates with all affected parties especially business owners and end-users.
  • Responsible for interior facility planning, space and development, including schedule and budget compliance and specific problems of a public relations nature.
  • Coordinates and communicates work specifications, installation and space management; architectural and engineering, planning and design; new construction and/or renovation; maintenance and operations management; telecommunications integration, security and general administrative services.
  • Reviews all project schedules to ensure achievement of project milestones and objectives.
  • Monitors for compliance and/or variance.
  • Reports on variance using established escalation structure.
  • Provides overall direction to ensure efficient, timely and cost-effective delivery of services including furniture configuration and relocation, facilities maintenance, groundskeeping and event set-up.
  • Ensures all project activities are conducted in compliance with University and Hospital policies related to: awarding of vendor contracts, purchase of materials and supplies, source of outside construction assistance, accounting of time and materials on projects and any possible conflict of interest.
  • Technical management of key service contracts including development, review and appropriate execution of service levels.
  • Assesses service contract performance, analyzes quotes, negotiates with vendors for best pricing and quality of purchase service.
  • Assists in fair bidding processes.
  • Maintains continuous alignment with defined strategic business objectives in conjunction with leadership and Operations management.
  • Leads the implementation of projects as assigned by managing leader.
  • This position may require on-call availability during non-standard hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to meet business needs and respond to emergencies as necessary
