About The Position

The Director – Epic Clinical Applications is responsible for the strategic leadership, implementation, optimization, and ongoing governance of Epic clinical applications across the organization. This role serves as the senior owner of Epic clinical systems, ensuring alignment with clinical workflows, regulatory requirements, patient safety standards, and organizational objectives. The Director partners closely with clinical leadership, operations, revenue cycle, IT, vendors, and executive stakeholders to deliver high-quality Epic solutions that support clinical excellence, operational efficiency, and a positive provider and patient experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in healthcare, Information Systems, Nursing, Clinical Informatics, or related field.
  • 5-7+ years of experience in progressive healthcare IT leadership.
  • Prior experience managing large, cross functional teams.
  • Strong understanding of clinical workflows in hospital and ambulatory settings.
  • Epic certification(s) in requested modules required or ability to obtain within defined timeframe.
  • Proven ability to lead complex, high impact initiatives in a healthcare environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in healthcare administration, Nursing Informatics, or Business Administration.
  • Epic credentials across multiple clinical domains.
  • 8–10+ years of progressive Epic experience, including leadership of clinical Epic modules.
  • Demonstrated experience leading full Epic implementations or large-scale Epic rollouts.
  • Epic certification(s) in one or more clinical modules, strongly preferred.
  • Experience in multi-facility health systems.
  • Experience with Epic integration or Epic Community Connect.
  • Clinical background (RN, MD, DO, PharmD, or another licensed clinician).

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the executive owner for Epic clinical applications, including (but not limited to): Ambulatory, Inpatient, Orders, Clinical Documentation, ASAP/ED, OpTime/Anesthesia, Willow, Beaker, and MyChart.
  • Develops and executes the Epic clinical roadmap aligned with enterprise strategy, regulatory requirements, and clinical priorities.
  • Establishes and oversees Epic governance structures, including steering committees, change control, and clinical informatics councils.
  • Ensures standardization of workflows where appropriate while accommodating specialty specific clinical needs.
  • Acts as the escalation point for Epic clinical risks, issues, and decision-making.
  • Leads all phases of Epic clinical implementations, expansions, and upgrades, including initial system deployment, module implementations and rollout sequencing, system integrations, version upgrades and foundation/system initiatives.
  • Oversees implementation planning, scope definition, timelines, resourcing, and budget management.
  • Partners with clinical stakeholders to design, validate, and approve future state workflows.
  • Ensures build decisions follow Epic best practices, organizational standards, and patient safety principles.
  • Coordinates with Epic, third-party vendors, and internal teams during design, build, testing, and live support.
  • Leads user readiness activities and command center support.
  • Serves as a trusted advisor to clinicians, nursing leadership, and operational leaders on Epic capabilities and clinical workflow design.
  • Translates clinical requirements into technical Epic solutions.
  • Partners with Quality, Patient Safety, Compliance, and Regulatory teams to ensure Epic supports organizational and accreditation standards.
  • Collaborates with Revenue Cycle, Analytics, and Population Health leaders to align clinical and financial workflows.
  • Leads, mentors, and develops Epic clinical managers, analysts, informaticists, and support staff.
  • Establishes clear roles, responsibilities, performance expectations, and career development pathways.
  • Ensures appropriate application coverage, on call support, and uptime responsiveness.
  • Fosters a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Drives post implementation optimization initiatives focused on usability, clinician efficiency, and patient safety.
  • Reviews Epic performance metrics, provider satisfaction, and system utilization.
  • Identifies opportunities to reduce documentation burden, automate workflows, and leverage Epic innovation.
  • Ensures timely resolution of incidents, defects, and enhancement requests.
  • Supports Epic User Web engagement and adoption of new Epic functionality.
  • Ensures Epic clinical systems comply with HIPAA, CMS, DNV, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Partners with Information Security and Privacy to support access controls, auditing, and data protection.
  • Supports disaster recovery planning, downtime procedures, and business continuity for clinical systems.
