About The Position

The Emergency Medical Sciences (EMS) Program Director provides academic leadership for EMS continuing education training, the Emergency Medical Science Associate of Applied Science Degree and the EMS Bridge Program. The Director will effectively lead and manage the programs’ curriculum (instruction and assessment), resources, and faculty (selection and professional development) in both curriculum and continuing education. The Director acts as a liaison between the communities of interest, accrediting bodies and Stanly Community College. The Emergency Medical Sciences Program Director serves as the EMS lead instructor, program advisor and administrator. The Director reports to the Associate Vice President of Health Sciences and Public Services. Clinical affiliates and/or off-site facilities may require faculty participating in clinical/off site activities to complete a criminal background check, drug screening, and provide proof of current immunization status, health status, and CPR certification. Faculty are required to present verification of current up to date immunizations, as required by the facility, and current CPR status, as required by the facility, to their supervisor annually.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in emergency medical care/sciences or a related field from an accredited institution
• Two years of community college teaching experience
• Currently certified NCOEMS Level II Paramedic Instructor
• Three years medical or allied health education, training, and experience
• Academic training and preparation related to emergency medical services at least equivalent to that of a paramedic.
• Experience in the delivery of out-of-hospital emergency care
• Knowledgeable about methods of instruction, testing and evaluation of students.
• Knowledgeable about the current versions of the National EMS Scope of Practice and National EMS Education Standards and about evidenced-informed clinical practice.

Nice To Haves

• Master’s degree in EMS or related field from an accredited institution
• Experience with a Learning Management System such as Canvas
• Experience in EMS accreditation such as CAAHEP/CoAEMSP
• Experience in managing physical and financial resources.
• Certified NREMT Paramedic
• Current instructor certifications for CPR/ Healthcare Provider, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
• Three years’ full time direct EMS (emergency paramedic) field experience

Responsibilities

• Teach program material via seated and online classes as required by the schedule.
• Learn new material to keep up with changing technology.
• Facilitate regular and substantive interaction via proactive communication with students.
• Participate in recruiting new students.
• Ensure classrooms, labs, and lab equipment are in good repair and maintain a safe environment for students and employees.
• Serve as a mentor to students in your area of expertise.
• Represent the program within the College and community as the primary point of contact with enthusiasm.
• Provide supervision to other faculty teaching within the program.
• Coordinate advisory boards, program updates, offerings, and scheduling of courses.
• Provide leadership and maintain a climate of open communication, collegiality, and teamwork within the department; actively support the professional growth and development of the department.
• Provide guidance and leadership in assessment of program and student learning outcomes within the department.
• Promote quality in learning and instruction by using learning-centered principles.
• Demonstrate high-level professionalism in developing and/or implementing long- and short-range plans in accordance with the philosophy of a learning-centered college.
• Participate in college, advisory, and program/instruction committees, campus activities, and representation of the college in the community.
• Develop strong partnerships with appropriate community stakeholders in support of new program development and college improvement.
• Develop strong partnerships with State and National agencies that support emergency services education.
• Demonstrate support for and work closely with health science faculty to prepare annual program reviews, to update and assess program improvement plans, to conduct research and surveys, and to produce reports.
• Continue professional development for the improvement of self and the department to meet the needs of a learning-centered college.
• Provide collaborative leadership in the following areas: student recruitment, admission, advising and registration activities; mentoring; SCC Foundation support; and grant identification, preparation, implementation, and evaluation.
• Provide direct student instruction in the classroom.
• Evaluate, review and recommend revisions of curriculum, syllabi, and selection of textbooks within the EMS Program.
• Provide leadership in evaluating the need for and recommending the materials and equipment necessary to the implementation and effective maintenance of educational programs within the EMS Program.
• Assume responsibility for supervision and evaluating the instruction of all courses taught within the EMS Program.
• Actively support innovation, distance learning, student-centered learning strategies, and the use of technology within the learning environment.
• Assure that all classes meet as scheduled and appropriate make up time is achieved if class is missed due to weather.
• Provide and maintain clinical contracts according to State and National Registry Guidelines.
• Provide two-way communications between the clinical/field internship sites for instructors and students.
• Provide a means for scheduling shifts for students to meet goals in hours and skills requirements as set forth by the EMS Program.
• Develop and recommend an EMS budget to the AVP of Health Sciences and Public Services.
• Oversee the operating budget of the EMS Program.
• Control and maintain the instructional equipment within the EMS Program.
• Document budget recommendations on the EMS Annual Plan.
• Participate in the recruitment of professional and instructional staff within the EMS Program.
• Coordinate the recruitment, selection, contracting, and evaluation of part-time faculty within the department.
• Supervise faculty and staff of the EMS Program.
• Manage the professional development of faculty within the department.
• Evaluate the professional and instructional staff within the department.
• Make recommendations for retention, dismissal, and promotion.
• Oversee the orientation of new faculty to the department and coordinate in-service training.
• Assist in the distribution of college policies and operational procedures to the professional and instructional staff of the EMS Program.
• Provide support for the policies, procedures and decisions of the college.
• Provide an essential link in the two-way communication between the administration and professional and instructional staff in the EMS Program.
• Serve as the official spokesperson for the EMS Program.
• Schedule and conduct program meetings and advisory committee meetings.
• Attend department, division, campus, and district academic committee meetings, as appropriate.
• Develop and recommend the AVP of Health Sciences and Public Services class schedules and assignments of teaching faculty.
• Adjudicate conflicts between the student and teaching faculty in the EMS Program by implementing college policies and procedures and programmatic rules.
• Develop course schedules.
• Compile data for the completion of reports to the college, boards and accrediting bodies.
• Oversee the handling of student documents and records required for participation in the program.
• Maintain the contracts for teaching institution status from the Office of EMS for the state of North Carolina.
• Maintain standards for renewing accreditation to meet the standards for the National Registry of EMTs.
• Develop, implement and collect data for the EMS Program Annual Plan, Learning Evidence Report and Program Review.

Benefits

• Full-time faculty who was continuously employed in the same position prior to September 1, 2021, are not required to provide proof of full vaccination for COVID-19 and their job duties may be modified if they are denied entry to a facility due to vaccination status.
• Part-time employees whose contract is expired after September 1, 2021, and who apply for rehire will be required to meet the vaccination requirements of the clinical or off-site facilities if the position into which they are hired requires them to supervise students being educated at such facilities.
