About The Position

Director Department of Global Health The Department of Global Health at the University of Washington, within the School of Medicine (SOM) and the School of Public Health (SPH), is seeking an outstanding leader as its Director of Finance and Administration. The Department was established in January 2007 as a joint venture between the two schools with a mission to improve health for all through research, education, training, and service; to understand and address the causes of disease and health inequities at multiple levels; and to collaborate with partners to develop and sustain locally-led, quality health systems, programs and policies. The Department currently includes 67 core faculty, 227 adjunct, affiliate and clinical faculty, 177 staff, and 341 students enrolled as of Winter 2025. The Department has an annual budget of approximately $100 million with an extensive research portfolio of projected revenue of $60 million in grants and contracts for AY25/26. The Department is the first joint Global Health Department in the nation and serves as a paradigm for focusing inter-disciplinary and inter-professional educational programs, collaborative research and professional service in public health policy and practice and medical care with the goal of establishing sustainable impact in global health with partners around the world. General Description This position reports to the Department Chair, the Vice Dean of Administration and Operations in SOM, and the Associate Dean of Finance and Administration in SPH and serves as the business manager/senior administrative and managerial support for the Department, including supervising administrative staff. As such, s/he performs a comprehensive range of responsibilities across both schools, including: financial management and development activities, operations and facilities management, HR management, information technology, research management, compliance and risk management, and education program management. The incumbent carries out these duties by directing, overseeing, and/or partnering with institutions and organizations both locally and abroad. The critical knowledge and skills are organized into the areas listed below. S/He acts in an advisory capacity to the Department Chair and various Department committees, providing financial and operational guidance, management advice, strategic insights and communication, team leadership and development. In addition, the Administrator is the Department and Center's primary working-level interface with the Dean's Office in SOM and SPH and other University units regarding administrative issues.

Requirements

  • This position requires a minimum of 5 years experience and a Master’s degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration, Public Health, or related field.
  • Management-level administrative experience, preferably in a research institution environment or academic medical center.

  • Demonstrated competence in financial operations, business planning, financial analysis, and strategic planning.
  • Demonstrated experience working with large, highly structured personnel systems.
  • Proven leadership, communication, team building, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the financial resources of the department to include budgets and funds from federal, state, private, University, and foundation sources to ensure ethical and fiduciary practices.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of and directs the department’s financial operations, funding sources, policies, and procedures
  • Interacts with faculty and staff to facilitate the department’s ability to achieve scientific and educational goals
  • Interprets policies and regulations concerning the department’s financial activities; ensures compliance with the University’s policies and procedures as well as guidelines from the federal government, state, and other research project sponsors
  • Develops and implements internal financial system controls to ensure integrity of all financial transactions in accordance with applicable jurisdictions
  • Manages and oversees departmental operations and facilities to ensure effective, efficient, safe, and compliant daily and long‑range functioning across all spaces and programmatic activities.
  • Provides strategic planning, operational oversight, and resource coordination to support the department’s mission in research, education, and service.
  • Coordinates and directs the full range of administrative activities required for day‑to‑day departmental operations.
  • Integrates and manages the cyclic operational requirements of the University of Washington, School of Public Health (SPH), and School of Medicine (SOM) within departmental planning, policies, and procedures.
  • Implements effective change management processes that account for organizational dynamics as well as approving bodies and regulatory requirements.
  • Develops, builds, and sustains internal and external partnerships to advance departmental priorities, strategic initiatives, and collaborative programs.
  • Plans, resources, monitors, and evaluates operational programs; prepares reports; makes recommendations on program continuation, modification, or termination.
  • Oversees the allocation, planning, and management of departmental space, including offices, laboratories, and research facilities.
  • Coordinates office and laboratory moves, relocations, and space modifications to support program growth and operational efficiency.
  • Develops long‑range space plans, including proposals for renovation and expansion; partners with the Chair and Dean’s Offices on business plans and requests for additional space.
  • Interprets and applies federal, state, UW, SPH, and SOM policies related to facilities management, safety, and capital resources.
  • Ensures that all department spaces maintain appropriate security, environmental controls, and safety protocols to safeguard personnel, information, research equipment, and physical assets.
  • Works closely with medical center and campus facilities teams to ensure timely repair, maintenance, and compliance with remodeling and facility modification guidelines.
  • Manages the research resources of the department, to include grant and contract staff and processes, research staff support, capital equipment, physical plant, IRB, and Protected Health Information compliance issues
  • Designs and implements administrative procedures for grant and contract administration
  • Interprets and integrates federal, state, industry, and private policies, laws, contracts and agreements regarding research activities at the UW
  • Assists faculty in the identification of research sponsorship, pre-submission activities, IRB and animal research requirements, supports documents and verifications, and submission of grant and contract proposals
  • Reviews and approves all department grant and contract applications undefined
  • Supports program director(s) and faculty in management of educational program(s).
  • Supports faculty in managing educational programs.
  • This includes direct supervision of educational support staff; identifies financial and other resources in support of educational programs; and responds effectively to difficult or non-routine challenges.
  • Adjusts departmental policies to adhere to the guidelines of professional, educational, or research organizations.
  • Supports periodic program reviews for accreditation, certification, or training grant renewals and managing changes to program requirements as directed by the Graduate School, SoM and SPH.
  • Responds to requests from current or potential graduate students and members of the general public about the department’s educational and research programs.
  • Oversee the human resources of the department, to include the faculty, department staff, postdocs, and academic employees, in accordance with University of Washington, Schools of Medicine and Public Health policy and procedures.
  • Interprets and integrates federal, state, UW, SPH and SOM, and other local laws and agreements into department policies and procedures
  • Responds to and assists in needs/requirements for employees
  • Manages the information requirements of the department, to include academic, business, educational and research information needs; incorporating and utilizing the existing Information Technology architecture.
  • Coordinates and manages the department web site and links including all aspects of department functions: service line and outreach activities, research enterprises, faculty biosketches and publications, and training programs
  • Develops written communication materials which may include department newsletter, advancement brochures, and other information to support public relations, scientific presentations, development activities
  • Coordinates and participates in public relations and/or fundraising events including donor relations and represents the department at University and external functions; collaborates with SPH and SOM Advancement for fundraising events and issues
  • Ensures a viable and secure Information Technology architecture is in place, and educates faculty and staff to the importance of and compliance with a configuration management plan and policy
  • Promotes compliance and manages risk in accordance with policies of the University, SPH, SoM , and other oversight bodies, to ensure operations and resources are in alignment with mission and requirements.
  • Interprets and integrates federal, state, and industry laws or policies on corporate compliance; topics to include fraud and anti-kick-back, to mitigate risk to the department and to individual faculty or staff
  • Ensures that all spaces, rooms, laboratories have appropriate security measures in place to safeguard information, physical resources, and staff
