About The Position

The Director Counsel - Litigation and Investigations role is part of the Target Legal Affairs team, which is a dynamic and knowledgeable group of experts. This team uses its expertise to advocate for Target, support its business, and mitigate risk. The Litigation and Investigations team specifically focuses on developing and executing legal strategies to achieve the best possible outcomes for Target. This involves engaging and directing internal and external partners, collecting and analyzing information, and providing advice and support to team members. The role will navigate complex business disputes and serve business partners across the enterprise. Responsibilities include handling a wide variety of litigation and investigation matters in state and federal courts nationwide, such as commercial, general liability, products liability, real estate, financial services, and class actions. The role requires assessing and engaging outside counsel, advising business leaders on litigation strategy, and creating and providing training. Collaboration with an internal team of paralegals and business and legal partners is essential to deliver optimal outcomes.

Requirements

• J.D. degree from an accredited law school
• Admitted or eligible for admission to the Minnesota bar
• 5+ years of legal experience in a law firm, in-house, or government capacity
• Experience managing disputes, pre-litigation matters, legal risk assessments, active litigation, and all aspects of the litigation lifecycle
• Ability to facilitate meetings, resolve conflict, build consensus, establish rapport and collaborate effectively, internally and externally, across all levels of an organization
• Analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to leverage data to influence decisions and distill complex or ambiguous issues into concise and actionable advice
• Ability to develop effective and collaborative relationships with key business leaders in order to independently drive accountability, instill confidence, and influence outcomes across business functions
• Highly organized, with the ability to adapt, prioritize and successfully manage multiple tasks or projects in response to changing or competing priorities
• Ability to apply discretion and sensitivity while working with confidential information
• Ability to develop effective written and verbal communications and presentations for all levels of leadership; comfort presenting information to large groups across all levels of the organization
• Demonstrated strategic skills with the ability to assess and challenge the current state, develop short and long term strategies, apply creative problem solving, and project manage initiatives from inception through implementation
• Comfortable making specific, fact-based recommendations in ambiguous situations
• Ability to navigate and learn new and emerging business, regulatory, and legal concepts
