Director-Corporate Controller

Tideworks Technology•Seattle, WA
•$165,000 - $205,000

About The Position

The Director-Corporate Controller reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer and serves as Tideworks Technology’s senior accounting executive. The role has full authority and accountability for the accounting organization, integrity of financial records, U.S. GAAP reporting, accounting operations, internal controls, audit readiness, and tax accounting coordination in a private-equity-backed software and technology business. The Controller leads all accounting functions and personnel, including the Senior Manager of Finance & Accounting and Accounting Manager, and owns the monthly, quarterly, and annual close; financial statement preparation; technical accounting; accounts payable; revenue and billing accounting; payroll accounting; tax reconciliations; and end-to-end financial operations. The position partners with FP&A, Sales, Professional Services, HR, Legal, IT, and the CFO. Accounting retains accountability for GAAP actuals and accounting policies, while FP&A owns budgets, forecasts, and financial planning. The role also leads accounting systems strategy and process improvement, including the ERP migration from IFS to NetSuite, and directs the accounting organization’s structure, controls, performance standards, hiring priorities, and staff development. It supports audits, lender and owner reporting, tax coordination, acquisition and transaction-related accounting, and potential exit diligence.

  • Active CPA is strongly preferred; CPA is required for candidates without demonstrably equivalent technical accounting expertise.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 4+ years leading an accounting team or controllership function.
  • Significant experience in software, SaaS, enterprise technology, or technology-enabled services.
  • Expert knowledge of U.S. GAAP, particularly ASC 606 and software revenue recognition.
  • Demonstrated ownership of annual audits, complex close processes, balance-sheet integrity, and financial reporting.
  • Experience managing core accounting processes, including general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll accounting, cash, and fixed assets.
  • Experience developing internal controls and leading cross-functional process improvements.
  • Hands-on NetSuite proficiency or demonstrated leadership implementing a comparable modern ERP.
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong accounting systems and data skills.
  • Ability to work strategically and hands-on in a lean, fast-paced, private-equity-backed environment, with high ownership, sound judgment, precise communication, and strong talent management.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with private-equity ownership, carve-outs or standalone company setup, debt reporting, audit readiness, M&A, or ERP migrations, especially IFS-to-NetSuite.
  • Public accounting foundation at a Big Four or national firm.
  • Multi-entity or multi-currency accounting experience.
  • International tax coordination experience.
  • Controls or SOX readiness experience.
  • Familiarity with Dynamics CRM, PSA/project accounting, recurring-revenue analytics, Power BI, and subscription billing integrations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the general ledger, consolidated trial balance, journal-entry approvals, balance-sheet reconciliations, accruals, allocations, and monthly, quarterly, and year-end close, targeting a 5–7 business-day monthly close.
  • Own GAAP-compliant financial statements, management reporting packages, accounting schedules, flux analysis, and explanations of earnings, balance-sheet movements, and cash-flow drivers.
  • Oversee accounts payable/procure-to-pay, accounts receivable/order-to-cash, billing, collections accounting, payroll accounting, fixed assets, leases, intercompany accounting, and expense reimbursement.
  • Oversee bank and cash reconciliations, payment controls, treasury accounting, debt and interest accounting, and near-term cash visibility in partnership with the CFO and FP&A.
  • Maintain a documented and reviewable close calendar, account ownership matrix, reconciliations, management review controls, and appropriate segregation of duties.
  • Own ASC 606 revenue recognition for software subscriptions/ARR, licenses, maintenance and support, hosting, implementation, and professional services, including variable consideration and contract modifications.
  • Ensure contract-to-cash data integrity across customer agreements, CRM, project/PSA systems, billing schedules, invoices, deferred and unbilled revenue, accounts receivable, and the general ledger; resolve cutoff discrepancies.
  • Prepare and review contract accounting memoranda for material or nonstandard arrangements, including performance obligations, standalone selling prices, allocation, principal-versus-agent considerations, and contract acquisition costs where applicable.
  • Own accounting policies for internally developed software and cloud implementation costs, fixed assets, leases, impairments, contingencies, acquisitions/business combinations, and other material transactions.
  • Partner with FP&A on ARR-to-GAAP revenue bridges, deferred and unbilled revenue rollforwards, working capital, revenue quality, and recurring-revenue KPI definitions, while leaving forecasting and budgeting with FP&A.
  • Lead annual external audits and support lender and owner reporting, including PBC requests, technical accounting positions, schedules, representation materials, and remediation of audit findings.
  • Design and strengthen a risk-based internal control framework, including entity-level controls, approvals, delegated authority, segregation of duties, access reviews, evidence retention, and readiness for enhanced controls or future SOX requirements.
  • Manage external tax advisory providers and coordinate federal, state, local, and international income tax compliance; indirect taxes; payroll-related tax matters; and tax provision support as applicable.
  • Own internal tax-related general ledger accounting, tax account reconciliations, tax accruals and payment reconciliations, support schedules, and variance resolution; coordinate tax positions and entity requirements with the CFO and external advisors.
  • Support lender covenant calculations, purchase accounting, separation/TSA accounting, opening balance sheets, quality-of-earnings support, acquisition integration, and potential exit diligence as required.
  • Serve as accounting business owner for ERP strategy and migration from IFS to NetSuite, including chart-of-accounts design, process mapping, master-data governance, controls, integrations, UAT, reconciliations, cutover, and post-go-live stabilization.
  • Improve workflows connecting CRM, project/PSA systems, ERP/billing, payroll, banks, and financial reporting; implement dashboards, automated reconciliations, approval workflows, and exception monitoring.
  • Document repeatable accounting policies, SOPs, KPIs, and control narratives, and reduce manual entries, spreadsheet dependencies, close cycle times, and billing and collections errors.
  • Direct the accounting organization, including management of the Senior Manager of Finance & Accounting and Accounting Manager, oversight of their teams and external providers, and responsibility for organizational structure, delegated authority, standards, review controls, succession, hiring, and development.
  • Collaborate with FP&A on actuals, forecasts, EBITDA, and working-capital explanations while maintaining clear separation between accounting ownership and financial planning.
  • Advise business leaders on the GAAP revenue, billing, capitalization, and cash-collection effects of contracting, pricing, and deal structures; promptly escalate material accounting risks to the CFO.
