About The Position

The Director, Congressional Affairs provides key leadership in advancing the AAN’s federal advocacy priorities and strengthening the Academy’s presence in Washington, DC. This role leads federal legislative advocacy and member engagement strategies, represents the Academy before Congress, and collaborates across the organization to develop and execute a comprehensive advocacy approach. The Director also supports committees and subcommittees in achieving federal health policy goals, brings innovative strategies to increase the AAN’s influence and effectiveness, and provides oversight for the AAN’s federal political action committee, BrainPAC.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Health Policy, or related field
  • Minimum of 8 years of federal lobbying, campaign or Capitol Hill experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated ability to uphold the AAN’s values
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise a team in a fast-paced environment and nurture individual career development and growth
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with legislative process, as well as a general understanding of rules and regulations
  • Demonstrated advanced oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft Office, specifically in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders with the ability to be managed remotely
  • Excellent time management skills, ability to deliver when facing multiple projects with tight deadlines
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail
  • Anticipates needed actions; plans and follows through with work activities; dependable and focused on getting things done to achieve goals
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information
  • Ability to effectively communicate in a variety of settings and to a wide range of constituencies
  • Ability to represent association to a variety of external audiences and stakeholders

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree is preferred
  • Health Policy experience is preferred
  • Experience working with the House Committee on Ways and Means and Senate Finance is preferred
  • Working knowledge of Political Action Committee distribution and fundraising is preferred
