About The Position

The Director of Communications and Marketing provides strategic leadership for all communications, marketing, and promotional initiatives for Notre Dame Engineering. Reporting to the Dean of the College, this role develops and executes integrated communications strategies that advance the College’s mission, strengthen its reputation, and increase awareness and engagement among key audiences, including prospective students, faculty, researchers, alumni, academic peers, University stakeholders, and external partners. The Director leads a talented communications and creative team responsible for telling the story of Notre Dame Engineering through compelling content, digital experiences, marketing campaigns, and brand initiatives. This position oversees the development and implementation of communications across multiple platforms, including websites, digital marketing, social media, news and announcements, events, digital displays, advertising, and promotional materials. Serving as a key representative of the College within the University communications community, the Director collaborates closely with academic departments, faculty, research centers, and University partners to ensure communications efforts are strategic, consistent, and aligned with University brand standards and goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive experience leading communications, marketing, or related strategic initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing communications strategies within a complex organization.
  • Experience leading and developing creative or communications teams.
  • Strong understanding of digital communications, web strategy, marketing trends, and audience engagement practices.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience managing budgets, vendors, and external creative partners.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in higher education communications, particularly within an academic, research, or engineering environment.
  • Familiarity with university communications structures, academic audiences, and research storytelling.
  • Experience working within established brand standards and institutional communication systems.
  • Knowledge of digital marketing analytics, content management systems, social media strategy, and emerging communication technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Create and implement a comprehensive communications and marketing strategy that supports the mission, priorities, and strategic goals of Notre Dame Engineering.
  • Lead efforts to enhance the College’s visibility, reputation, and engagement through integrated marketing campaigns and communications initiatives.
  • Monitor trends, assess effectiveness, and use analytics and insights to measure impact and continuously improve communications strategies.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to the Dean, leadership team, departments, faculty, and staff on communications priorities and opportunities.
  • Oversee the creation and delivery of high-quality communications content, including web content, news stories, feature articles, digital campaigns, newsletters, promotional materials, social media content, photography, video, and other creative assets.
  • Guide the creative direction and storytelling approach for College communications to highlight education, research, innovation, faculty achievements, and student experiences.
  • Manage the ongoing development and improvement of the College website, department websites, faculty and laboratory websites, and digital communication platforms.
  • Identify, engage, and manage external vendors, freelancers, and creative partners as needed.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for the communications and marketing team.
  • Establish priorities, workflows, and processes to ensure effective execution of communications initiatives.
  • Oversee team performance, provide coaching and feedback, and support a culture of collaboration and innovation.
  • Manage the College’s communications and marketing budget, including planning, forecasting, and resource allocation.
  • Represent Notre Dame Engineering within the broader University communications community and serve as a liaison with partners across campus.
  • Collaborate with offices including Admissions, the Graduate School, Notre Dame Research, and the Office of Public Affairs and Communications to support shared institutional goals.
  • Partner with academic departments, faculty, research groups, and administrative units to develop communications strategies that amplify their work.
  • Ensure alignment with University brand standards, messaging, and communication practices.
