About The Position

Trans Mountain Corporation operates Canada’s only pipeline system transporting oil products to the West Coast. We deliver approximately 890,000 barrels of petroleum products each day through a dual pipeline system of more than 1,150 kilometres of pipeline in Alberta, British Columbia and Washington state. Trans Mountain also operates a state-of-the-art loading facility, Westridge Marine Terminal, with three berths providing tidewater access to global markets. As a federal Crown corporation, Trans Mountain continues to build on more than 70 years of experience delivering operational and safety excellence through our crude oil pipeline system. Trans Mountain is seeking a collaborative, motivated, and values driven individual to join our dynamic team as a Director, Commercial Law. In this position, you will play a key role in providing and facilitating commercial legal advice and services to Trans Mountain’s operations and corporate functions. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in managing a broad range of commercial legal matters, including corporate, commercial, procurement, leasing, and land acquisition, as well as engaging and overseeing external commercial counsel when required.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in law, or related discipline.
  • Membership or certification with a recognized legal or professional association (e.g., Law Society of Alberta, Canadian Bar Association, Calgary Bar Association), or equivalent education and experience is preferred.
  • Continuing Legal Education (CLE) is preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience.
  • General understanding of federal regulatory oversight and practice focuses on commercial energy law including commercial contract drafting, acquisitions, joint ventures, and procurement and land matters.
  • Proven leadership and people management skills, with a strong ability to mentor, guide, and collaborate within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • A track record of delivering high‑quality work, managing competing priorities, and supporting key business processes or operational functions.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong, collaborative working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds and levels across the organization.
  • Agile and adaptable in approach, with the ability to respond effectively to shifting priorities and evolving business needs.
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to convey information clearly, respectfully, and professionally.
  • Comfortable working in environments with a high degree of ambiguity, exercising sound judgment and initiative when information is incomplete or requirements evolve.
  • Proven organizational skills with the ability to manage priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Commitment to inclusive practices and a willingness to contribute positively to a collaborative and supportive workplace culture.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal guidance and strategic direction on corporate and commercial matters including negotiations, support for business development, partnerships, and joint ventures.
  • Provide management and legal oversight of public disclosures as required.
  • Provide legal support for all operational matters, including asset management, shipper services, information technology, land issues, contractual arrangements, and negotiations with upstream and downstream stakeholders.
  • Responsible for protecting intellectual property and preparing and negotiating any corresponding licensing agreements, real property, and commercial licensing matters.
  • Provide support, as needed on confidentiality, and non-disclosure agreements.
  • Advise on supply chain planning, contracts, procurement, logistics, and material management activities for the existing business related to Trans Mountain.
  • Support business groups with contractor reviews and management.
