Then we would love to have you join us! The Director, R&D Business Operations will lead the newly established Business Operations capability within the R&D Operations department. In line with the decentralized Business Operations model, this role will serve as the overarching lead for Business Operations. The Director, R&D Business Operations will maintain a holistic view across R&D while enabling strong ownership within the individual functions. This leader will be the central point for R&D Business Operations, with accountability for connecting the full picture across budget, resource allocation, communications, planning, reporting, and operational processes. The role will work in close partnership with functional Business Operations leads embedded in the R&D functions and with the TechOps anchor point to ensure alignment, transparency, and consistency while considering functional needs and priorities. The position will report directly to the VP, Head of R&D Operations and is hybrid and can be based in either Utrecht, NL or Plainsboro, NJ. This role offers flexibility to work away from the office for 20%–40% of a typical schedule. Employees may use this work schedule in increments of single days or multiple consecutive days, provided it does not exceed 40% within a 60-day period, and is approved by the hiring manager.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree is required; Advanced degree (Masters, PhD) in Business, Life Sciences, Finance, Operations, or a related field strongly preferred.
  • 10 years of relevant experience in Business Operations, R&D Operations, or related roles within the life sciences industry.
  • Experience working in global, matrixed R&D organizations.
  • Experience leading budgeting, workforce planning, and resource allocation processes.
  • Demonstrated track record in project management and execution of operational strategies.
  • Strong capabilities in strategic thinking, stakeholder management, and organizational alignment.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive alignment in decentralized organizations.
  • Experience with process improvement, automation, and/or AI-enabled initiatives.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and influence diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership and team development experience.
  • Strong analytical capability with a data-driven approach to decision making.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a structured and pragmatic approach.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the anchor point for the Business Operations function, establishing it as a central capability across R&D.
  • Serve as the overarching central point for Business Operations leaders within the R&D functions, connecting budget, headcount, resource allocation and communications.
  • Define and drive consistent frameworks, governance, and ways of working for the Business Operations function across R&D, working in partnership with the VP, Head of TechOps Strategy and Business Effectiveness.
  • Drive harmonization of operational practices while enabling functional flexibility.
  • Ensure strong budgeting rigor and aligned planning processes across R&D.
  • Lead cross-functional workforce planning and resource alignment.
  • Provide enterprise-wide visibility to support leadership decision-making.
  • Partner with functional Business Operations leads to ensure consistency and alignment.
  • Establish governance, cadences, and operational reviews to drive performance.
  • Deliver high-quality analytics and reporting for business insights.
  • Leverage digital, data, and AI-enabled approaches where appropriate to accelerate insights and execution.
  • Ensure consistent practices across planning, reporting, and communications.
  • Translate strategic priorities into coordinated operational plans.
  • Build strong stakeholder relationships across R&D&T and enabling functions.
