About The Position

The Director, Broadcast Positioning System (BPS) Field Engineering is a hands-on technical leader responsible for supporting the development, deployment, and operation of NAB’s Broadcast Positioning System (BPS). This role is ideal for an experienced broadcast engineer with deep expertise in ATSC 3.0, RF systems, and IP-based infrastructure. You will play a critical role in bringing next-generation positioning technology to life, working directly with broadcast stations, technology partners, and government stakeholders to deploy, test, and optimize BPS across a variety of real-world environments, including critical infrastructure applications. As Director, BPS Field Engineering, you will be a key contributor to this effort, helping to operationalize cutting-edge technology and advance the role of broadcasting in critical infrastructure and next-generation services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 8+ years of experience in broadcast engineering or a related field.
  • Strong expertise in broadcast RF systems or similar system.
  • Proven experience in IT systems, IP networking, and troubleshooting complex technical environments.
  • Hands-on experience with system integration, configuration, and field deployment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing and managing ATSC 3.0 broadcast television systems.
  • Project management experience.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a principal technical resource supporting BPS across commercial deployments, R&D environments, lab trials, and field tests.
  • Lead field engineering efforts at ATSC 3.0 broadcast stations, receive sites, and critical infrastructure locations.
  • Configure, deploy, and operate BPS systems across a variety of environments, including permanent and temporary installations.
  • Integrate precision timing systems (e.g., atomic clocks, reference time clocks), signal processing equipment, and RF distribution systems to ensure accurate and reliable BPS data flow.
  • Oversee operation and maintenance of ATSC 3.0 broadcast equipment, including encoders, gateways, exciters, schedulers/packagers, and IP networking infrastructure.
  • Program and configure software and systems operating in virtualized and networked environments.
  • Leverage strong IT and IP networking expertise to maintain and optimize lab and station infrastructure.
  • Configure and manage Ethernet switches, routers, and related systems to ensure efficient data flow.
  • Conduct drive testing, calibration, and field measurements of BPS signals.
  • Utilize test equipment such as oscilloscopes and frequency counters to validate performance.
  • Develop and refine measurement and calibration processes for transmission systems and receivers.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of systems, configurations, licenses, and procedures.
  • Develop technical manuals, training materials, and best practices.
  • Share expertise with NAB members and industry stakeholders through conferences, webinars, and other forums.
  • Work closely with NAB member stations, technology vendors, and government partners.
  • Provide technical guidance on BPS development, integration, and deployment strategies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
