About The Position

The Director of Assessment provides strategic leadership for the district’s comprehensive assessment system to ensure alignment with teaching and learning priorities and to improve student outcomes. The role leads to the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of assessment practices that connect assessment, data use, curriculum and instruction to support high-quality teaching and learning across the district. The Director ensures that all required assessments are administered with fidelity and in full compliance with state and federal guidelines, while prioritizing the use of assessment as a lever to improve instruction. This role requires a leader who can operate at both strategic and operational levels, driving coherence across assessment, data, curriculum, and instruction in a large, complex school system.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree required in Education or Education Leadership
  • Tier II Educational Leadership Certification required; or eligibility to obtain within 3 years
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in an educational leadership role required
  • 3 years supervisory experience required
  • Ability to lead complex, cross-functional work and build organizational coherence
  • Strong understanding of assessment systems, data use, and instructional practices
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with executive-level leaders and influence without direct authority
  • Ability to translate data into actionable insights that support teaching and learning
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and ensure operational effectiveness
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment
  • Ability to manage financial, material, and human resources effectively
  • Must be skilled in collaborative leadership of individuals and groups

Responsibilities

  • Develops and leads a coherent, district-wide assessment framework aligned to instructional priorities
  • Establishes clear priorities, roles, and systems to ensure alignment, efficiency, and impact across the department
  • Partners with academic leaders to ensure assessment practices support school improvement, instructional decision-making, and effective data use within PLCs, school leadership teams, and classrooms
  • Collaborates with the Strategy and Technology Division to ensure alignment between assessment systems, data reporting structures, and accountability requirements
  • Oversees the accurate, secure, and compliant administration of all state, national, and local assessments
  • Ensures effective training, support, and communication for school test coordinators and school leaders
  • Leads cross-functional collaboration with Curriculum, Academic Programs, Instructional Technology, and other departments to ensure coherence across initiatives
  • Supervises and develops department staff, including coordinators, program specialists, and support personnel
  • Leads and develops coordinators as instructional leaders responsible for the effectiveness of the assessment framework
  • Collaborates with district leaders and school personnel to develop, evaluate, and improve student performance assessments
  • Advises schools and departments regarding best practices for using assessment results, and provides professional development training for assessment platforms as well as data analysis and action
  • Oversees vendor relationships, assessment platforms, and operational systems to ensure reliability and effectiveness
  • Manages departmental resources, including budget and procurement processes
  • Represents the district in state-level assessment work and professional networks
  • Directs the timely and accurate completion and submission of local, State, and Federal reports and serves as FCSS Assessment Director for the State of Georgia
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Learning and Teaching or Chief Academic Officer or the appropriate administrator
