About The Position

Reporting directly to the Vice President, Accounting, this position is a key member of the Accounting team, responsible for leading the full cycle accounting process for the Edmonton Oilers, Edmonton Oil Kings, Bakersfield Condors and other affiliated OEG entities. The Director, Accounting will ensure the timely and accurate delivery of monthly financial statements and the accuracy of all accounting postings trial balance accounts under IFRS accounting.

Requirements

  • Chartered Professional Accounting (CPA) Designation is required
  • Minimum eight years of progressive accounting experience, including three to five years in a management role
  • Excellent financial reporting and analytical skills
  • Detail focused, strong business acumen and well versed in financial modelling and analysis
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to build and maintain excellent relationships with staff and 3rd party managers
  • Experience with computerized accounting software (i.e. Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains, Solver, etc.) and proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Understanding of concepts and underlying details, ability to identify errors, and foresight to strategize and make decisions with consideration to both operational and financial implications

  • Experience with IFRS would be considered an asset

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the timely and accurate monthly and quarterly close procedures for OEG’s group of companies are met
  • Prepare, review and distribute of monthly financial statement package at the legal entity level for purposes of reporting to senior finance staff and internal stakeholders
  • Oversees and maintains day-to-day accounting processes including posting journal entries and preparing general ledger reconciliation
  • Perform balance sheet reviews and provide consolidated variance commentary on key accounts
  • Improve accounting and reporting processes to increase efficiency, effectiveness, and compliance with internal controls
  • Review of revenue recognition accounting postings and working papers related to ticketing, retail, TV & Radio, NHL Media, Digital Oilers+ and 50/50 Gaming
  • Review of expense postings and working papers related to players compensation, business expenses, hocket expenses and capital and depreciation
  • Review journal entries, reconciliations, and budget-to-actual variance analysis to ensure accurate and reliable accounting records across the portfolio
  • Lead, train, and mentor accounting team members
  • Evaluate financial reporting systems and general ledger reporting; design and implement improvements that support operational and financial reporting needs
  • Collaborate wit the Finance team for the build-up of consolidated IFRS and operational financial statements
  • Collaborate when needed with the Financial Planning & Analysis team to support the annual budget preparation for specific OEG companies and its affiliated entities
  • Collaborate when needed with the Finance Treasury team to support cash flow preparation and analysis
  • Support where needed the preparation of NHL Hockey Related Revenue (HRR) and Unified Report of Operations (URO) reports
  • Assists with annual financial statement audit, including preparation and review of audit working papers
