About The Position

Whop is seeking an Director, Accounting to build the company’s accounting foundation from the ground up. This is a hands-on role responsible for all aspects of accounting operations — including accounting, internal controls, month-end close, financial reporting, tax compliance, and audit readiness. You will partner closely with the Corporate Controller and Head/ VP of Finance to transform Whop’s accounting function from startup mode into a disciplined, scalable operation. This is an ideal role for a builder — someone who enjoys designing processes, leading from the front, and establishing strong financial hygiene in a fast-paced, tech-driven environment.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong operational and technical accounting background (US GAAP) — ideally with experience in SaaS, marketplace, or fintech revenue recognition.
  • Hands-on operator: comfortable working in systems (NetSuite, Campfire, FloQast, Ramp or similar) and designing processes.
  • Experience with audit management and financial statement preparation.
  • Proven ability to hire, mentor, and scale a small team.
  • CPA license or Big 4 background strongly preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience implementing ERP or financial systems (NetSuite, Campfire, Ramp or FloQast).
  • Exposure to payments/ fintech or ads accounting .
  • Prior startup or marketplace experience — ability to thrive in ambiguity and build from scratch.

Responsibilities

  • Build the Foundation: Assist the Controller in design and implementation of Whop’s formal accounting policies, processes, and internal controls.
  • Establish a structured month-end and year-end close process.
  • Lead accounting system upgrades, process automation, and data quality initiatives.
  • Lead Core Accounting Operations: Oversee all GL accounting, revenue recognition, cost of sales, payroll, and accruals.
  • Manage cash, crypto, and other digital asset reconciliations.
  • Financial Reporting & Compliance: Preparing and owning the financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow).
  • Ensuring compliance with GAAP (or IFRS) accounting policies.
  • Managing technical accounting questions — revenue recognition, equity, leases, etc.
  • Owning the chart of accounts and accounting policy documentation.
  • Develop accounting schedules and support investor, board, and management reporting.
  • Internal Controls & Systems: Designing and maintaining the internal control environment (especially important pre-audit or as you scale).
  • Owning the ERP/accounting system and chart of accounts.
  • AP/AR oversight and cash reconciliation.
  • Foreign Entities: Leading the decision and setup of new legal entities in foreign jurisdictions (working with local counsel and tax advisors).
  • Determining the right entity structure (branch vs. subsidiary, etc.).
  • Setting up local statutory reporting requirements.
  • Managing inter-company accounting and elimination entries.
  • Currency/FX accounting — functional currency determinations, translation vs. remeasurement.
  • Ensuring local payroll, VAT registration, and statutory filings are in place.
  • People & Systems: Supervise and develop the company’s accounting team and external consultants.
  • Evaluate and implement scalable systems (ERP, accounting automation, expense management, and payroll integrations).
  • Drive accountability, documentation, and data integrity across all financial operations.
  • Audit & External Relationships: Issuing the RFP, evaluating firms, and making the recommendation (though final sign-off often sits with the CFO/board/audit committee).
  • Managing the day-to-day audit relationship once selected — preparing schedules, responding to requests, coordinating PBC (prepared by client) lists.
  • Liaison to external tax advisors for compliance filings.
