About The Position

As the Directional Drill Operator, you will ultimately be responsible for operating directional drilling equipment, supporting underground utility installation, and maintaining safe drilling operations. You will operate, inspect, transport, and maintain drilling equipment while assisting field crews in completing telecommunications construction projects safely and efficiently. As the Directional Drill Operator, your customers are internal construction teams, project managers, and telecommunications clients, and you will make meaningful contributions to the company's success through safe equipment operation, quality workmanship, and operational efficiency.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Minimum one year of experience operating directional drilling equipment and locating underground utilities.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment near active underground utilities within telecommunications or utility construction.
  • Ability to safely operate drilling equipment and work around existing underground utilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, utility locates, and project specifications.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, ANSI standards, basic computer skills, and safe excavation practices.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, climb, push, pull, and perform physically demanding work for extended periods.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and around heavy equipment and active construction zones.
  • Ability to maintain visual and audible awareness of crew members, vehicles, and surrounding hazards.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety boots, hard hat, safety glasses, and other required safety gear.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check, drug screen, and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review.

Nice To Haves

  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement or willingness to obtain one.
  • DOT Medical Card (or willingness to obtain), and experience operating Ditch Witch or Vermeer equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate directional drilling equipment and related construction machinery while following company safety policies and procedures.
  • Perform directional drilling and utility locating activities while safely working around existing underground utilities.
  • Inspect, transport, load, unload, maintain, and document assigned equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Support underground construction activities including conduit installation, potholing, shoring, rigging, concrete work, concrete work, asphalt placement, and restoration as required.
  • Read utility locates, construction plans, and specifications to develop safe drilling paths and prevent utility strikes.
  • Travel overnight to project sites and communicate effectively with supervisors regarding daily work activities.
