About The Position

The Salvation Army is seeking a Direct Support Worker to join their team. This role is responsible for ensuring residents abide by parole conditions and house rules, maintaining a safe and orderly environment, and supporting residents in their reintegration process. The position requires a commitment to The Salvation Army's mission, values, and ethical standards, with a focus on providing service with dignity and respect to individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Requirements

  • Subject to Canadian Reliability Status for duration of employment.
  • Computer literate.
  • Effective communication skills, both orally and written.
  • Effective conflict resolution and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to understand the dynamics of offender’s behavior and assess their needs and risk.
  • Ability to understand the use of authority in supervision and to intervene effectively in crisis interventions.
  • Tolerance and compassion for individuals of diverse social and cultural backgrounds.
  • The ability to understand the dynamics of offender behavior and assess their needs and risks.
  • The skills to counsel offenders, form effective relationships and gain trust.
  • The skills to understand the use of authority in supervision and to intervene effectively in crisis situations.
  • The ability to assist offenders in identifying and solving the practical problems involved in their successful reintegration.
  • The skills to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • The ability to demonstrate cultural competence and respect for diversity.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure residents abide by conditions of Parole and house rules.
  • Ensure there are sufficient forms available and photocopy as needed.
  • Engage in regular evaluations with the Director.
  • Attend all staff meetings.
  • Participate as a team member geared towards the needs of the residents and the house.
  • Respect proper lines of authority.
  • Protect the confidentiality of all residents and staff.
  • Encourage an atmosphere of trust and respect while exercising control.
  • Read, understand, and recognize roles and responsibilities of other positions and cross-task if required.
  • Arrive 10 to 15 minutes prior to shift start for a smooth transition.
  • Complete a full house round to ensure premises are neat, clean, and that PROPER HEAD COUNT COINCIDES WITH NAMES AND NUMBERS RECORDED IN LOGBOOK before accepting keys.
  • Make sure all doors are locked that are supposed to be.
  • Read and discuss with outgoing staff any new entries in the log book or any relevant information/reports that require follow-up.
  • Be awake at all times.
  • Monitor Sign-Out Log to verify name and location on card when resident signs out and upon call-ins.
  • Distribute medications and record in the medication log book.
  • Complete supervisor check list.
  • Ensure security of each resident and the building.
  • Ensure the portable phone and panic button is with you at all times.
  • Ensure intake of new residents is completed, as well as out-take tasks.
  • Perform other duties as deemed necessary by the Director or Program Coordinator.
