The Direct Support Professional (DSP) is responsible for advocating and supporting adults 22 and over with intellectual and developmental disabilities, empowering them to be as active in their lives as possible. This support includes, but is not limited to, assistance with household maintenance, meal preparation, shopping, bathing, toileting, dressing, and personal hygiene. DSPs may also assist individuals with medical appointments, banking, community integration, outings, medication administration, and following Behavior Support Plans, Individual Support Plans, and medical guidelines. DSP workers receive paid New Employee Orientation, paid CPR/First Aid, PABC, Defensive Driving, and Medication Administration Program (MAP) training, as well as program and person-specific training at the individuals’ homes. DSPs must be able to safely evacuate individuals from the home in an emergency and must maintain certifications, comply with Agency policies, and follow all DDS regulations/policies.
