YAI was launched in February of 1957 with a mission to provide innovative services for the I/DD (intellectual and/or developmental disabilities) community, emphasizing personal growth, social responsibility, employment goals, and the development of independence for the individual. Today, YAI has a team of over 4,000 employees and supports over 20,000 people with autism, Down syndrome, and Cerebral Palsy, among others, operating throughout Downstate New York and Northern New Jersey with more than 300 programs. The Direct Support Professional (DSP) assists individuals in maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities, upholding their personal rights, and building positive relationships. This role involves supporting people to meet personal goals, engaging in respectful communication, encouraging socializing, and facilitating community connections. DSPs are responsible for the overall supervision, protection, and care of individuals, ensuring their health, wellness, and safety, and managing crisis situations. They provide support in various settings according to individualized service and behavior support plans, utilizing skills for people with varying levels of need and demonstrating OPWDD Core Competencies. The position also involves maintaining a clean and safe therapeutic environment, assisting with personal care and daily living activities, administering medication, teaching skills, supporting advocacy, facilitating ethical decision-making, and preparing meals. DSPs transport individuals, assist with purchases, and safeguard funds. They develop specialized clinical knowledge for person-specific needs, implement Behavior Support Plans, collect and record data on behavior, and report changes to the clinical/leadership team. DSPs are members of a highly effective team, providing feedback and maintaining a solution-oriented approach. They complete necessary trainings and certifications, review communication logs, and complete required paperwork and documentation. They use foundational teaching skills, understand behavior as communication, and comply with all regulatory requirements, including HIPAA. DSPs report maintenance and safety concerns, consult with program leadership, and utilize approved YAI and OPWDD training techniques to respond to challenging behaviors. They also provide coverage for other staff and may participate in treatment plan development or operate YAI vehicles for transport.
