About The Position

The Direct Support Professional - Residential Aid will provide training and supervision to residents in ADL skills and will directly participate in daily household management. This role involves assisting individuals in developing independent living skills, personal care, money management, and community orientation. The position requires accurate documentation, adherence to agency policies, and the ability to work in a 24-hour coverage environment, including during inclement weather. Travel between work locations may be required, with reimbursement for approved personal vehicle use. The role also involves administering medications, accompanying residents on outings, and maintaining the residence.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Possess a valid NY State driver’s license acceptable to the agency’s insurance carrier.
  • Must physically be able to perform required certifications and lift fifty (50) pounds.
  • Candidate must be able to lift 50 pounds and not have any lifting restrictions which would prohibit him/her from assisting with toileting, transfers, physical intervention, lifting, etc.
  • A valid driver’s license and good driving record acceptable to the Agency’s insurance carrier is required for all positions.
  • Obtaining and maintaining certification in Medication Administration, CPR, First Aid and SCIP.
  • Responsible for following agency safety and health policies, procedures, and rules.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with the OPWDD population preferred with plan continued education/training.
  • Some knowledge of or experience working with developmentally disabled preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide training and assistance to individuals to help them develop and/or improve independent living skills such as cooking, housekeeping, laundry skills, grocery shopping, etc.
  • Provide assistance and training to individuals to assist them in developing and/or improving personal care skills; i.e. showering, toothbrushing, toileting, bathing, etc.
  • Provide supervision to individuals at the residence and in the community as appropriate.
  • Provide training in money management such as budgeting, banking, and making appropriate purchases.
  • Complete all documentation and records accurately and within appropriate time frames; T-logs, Habilitation plans, Progress reports and any other assigned documentation.
  • Read agency e-mails daily through the agency utilized email systems.
  • Make every effort to report to work in the event of inclement weather, including, but not limited to, snow, ice, freezing rain, or flood.
  • Make every effort to remain at work in the event inclement weather occurs during their work schedule until relieved of duty by the following shift.
  • Travel or transfer between one work location/site and another per a supervisor's request.
  • Follow assigned work schedule and placement.
  • Administer resident medications and logging according to procedure.
  • Accompany residents to grocery stores and other stores for on-site training in purchasing.
  • Provide training in mobility and community orientation.
  • Act as role model to residents in teaching household and community skills.
  • Attend case conferences, screenings, discharge conferences and meetings as requested.
  • Perform/participate in assessment and service plan development and implementation.
  • Follow all policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a positive relationship with parents, participants and other staff.
  • Transport residents and supervise on appointments, recreational and/or other activities as needed.
  • Keep supervisor informed of any residents’ health and safety issues.
  • Assist residents with or, if necessary, completing daily or routine domestic tasks.
  • Maintain the residence by cleaning as instructed by the supervisor any part of the house and/or its contents including any or all of the following: vacuuming, mopping, dusting, shampooing floors and carpets; cleaning cupboards; dusting furniture, walls, woodwork; cleaning appliances (large and small); cleaning windows, counter tops, blinds.
  • Assist with filing, record keeping and maintaining an orderly office.
  • Adhere to Part 633 and Part 624 Regulations related to Consumer Rights, Abuse and Reporting.
  • Adhere to Incident and Accident reporting per policies and procedures.
  • Advocate for the rights of the developmentally disabled.
  • Attend scheduled house meetings.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Benefits

  • Pay: $20.00 - $21.75
  • Full-time - All shifts available
  • Mileage reimbursement at the per mile rate set by IRS guidelines.
