About The Position

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) is responsible for a variety of duties related to the overall care of individuals with developmental disabilities who reside in residential programs. This includes direct care of program individuals and implementation of individual support plans and behavior support plans. Direct Support Professionals are required to perform all duties in accordance with State of Oregon Administrative Rules, related to the specific program they are working with.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have a valid Oregon Driver’s license.
  • Must be able to be approved by the background criminal history unit.
  • Ability to quickly become proficient in all office technology required for the position to include; Office Machinery, MS Office programs, iLearn, Ulti-Pro, Office 365, Therap, Brainier.
  • Ability to manage, prioritize and complete multiple job duties throughout your shift.
  • Acts with integrity and demonstrates trustworthiness in all relationships by showing commitment, consistency, and capability.
  • Must be able to initiate and maintain positive relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Direct Support Professionals must be able to manage multiple priorities and make determinations about tasks and deadlines.
  • Frequent flexibility, patience, and ongoing problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Involves frequent use of reading, writing, and math.
  • Regular use of telephone, office equipment, and computers.
  • Requires ability to learn and use current and future technology to fulfill job responsibilities.
  • Typically, required to maintain routine work with regular supervision.
  • Ability to anticipate and plan for needed or upcoming changes.
  • Will occasionally be asked to orient and/or train new employees.
  • New or unusual work is performed with a moderate degree of supervision, assistance, and review.
  • Must be able to foresee issues associated with own work and identify future needs for operations or activities.

Responsibilities

  • Orient themselves to the current operations of the home and the needs of people served by reviewing all information available since last work shift.
  • Maintain all records and documentation as required and replaces forms as needed.
  • Ensure the working and living environment (including vehicle) is maintained in a clean and safe manner and corrects or reports any unsafe or unsanitary conditions.
  • Assist in the sanitary preparation, service and storage of food according to the individuals’ preference within the guidelines of specified diets.
  • Assist with grocery shopping while involving the person served as much as possible.
  • Encourage and assist people to wear appropriate attire according to scheduled activities and weather and provides support as needed.
  • Ensure laundry is done in a timely and sanitary manner including assisting with washing, drying, storing and labeling.
  • Be responsive and proactive in providing necessary supervision, training and support.
  • Assist with personal hygiene activities including, but not limited to, bathing, toileting, shaving, tooth brushing, nail care, menses, dressing, and incontinence issues.
  • Review and update Personal Property Inventory.
  • Maintain individuals’ financial records as negotiated.
  • Follow procedures for preparation, administration and documentation of medications and treatments.
  • Accurately check in medications, treatments, Medication and Treatment Administration Records, and physician’s orders.
  • Notify supervisor of any discrepancies or signs of side effects.
  • Independently identify the need and reorder medications and treatments as needed.
  • Monitor and document vital signs and respond as indicated.
  • Ensure all therapies are implemented as ordered.
  • Maintain an awareness of changes in the individual’s health status, follow protocols that apply, document the event, and report as required or indicated.
  • Assist individuals to attend medical appointments.
  • Ensure information provided during the appointment is documented as required.
  • Assist persons served to communicate their personal needs, wishes and preferences to the appropriate person(s).
  • Provide input into or complete the Person-Centered Information.
  • Engage persons served in meaningful use of free time per individual preferences and Individual Support Planning (ISP) agreements.
  • Encourage individuals’ decision making and promote autonomy.
  • Inform and educate persons served regarding rules, regulations and laws that apply and the consequences of failing to abide by them.
  • Inform and educate persons served regarding correspondence to them and assist with follow up and/or action as requested or needed.
  • Participate in personal and organizational development.
  • Successfully complete all required orientation, training and health testing.
  • Maintain all certifications and licenses as required throughout employment.
  • May be required to participate in searches for lost persons per policy.
  • Complete the Vehicle Checklist and addresses any concerns.
  • Train other staff and document on the orientation checklist.
  • Provide relevant feedback to staff being trained and supervisor.
  • Accurately file documents within specified time frames.
  • Initiate and document fire drills.
  • Complete Share the Wealth Duties.
  • Forecast departmental projections.
  • Attend and participate in required meetings and training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
