This role involves assisting individuals in maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities, upholding their personal rights, and providing emotional support. The Direct Support Professional supports people to meet personal goals, engages in respectful communication, and encourages social connections within the community. A key responsibility is the overall supervision, protection, and care of individuals, including maintaining program guidelines, facilitating fire safety training, and identifying potential harm to self or others. The position ensures health, wellness, and safety by providing appropriate supervision and managing crisis situations. Support is provided in various settings according to individualized service and behavior support plans, utilizing support skills for individuals with varying needs and demonstrating OPWDD Core Competencies. This includes implementing person-centered plans, Behavior Support Plans (BSPs), and Staff Action/Life Plans. The role requires maintaining a clean, safe, and organized therapeutic environment, utilizing safe handling procedures, and adhering to infection control protocols. Specific tasks include assisting with personal care, ADLs, medication administration, teaching skills, advocacy, communication support, meal preparation, and transportation. The professional will develop an understanding of specialized clinical knowledge for specific needs and implement Behavior Support Plans. Data collection, observation, and reporting of changes in behavior are crucial. The role is part of a team, requiring feedback and communication of programmatic needs. All necessary trainings and certifications must be completed and maintained. Daily review and entry of communication logs, progress notes, and data using an electronic health record are required. Other documentation, including incident reports and file updates, must be completed accurately and on time. Foundational teaching skills and person-centered thinking are essential. Compliance with all regulatory agency requirements, including HIPAA, is mandatory. Maintenance and safety concerns must be reported. Consultation with program leadership and attendance at team meetings are expected. Approved YAI and OPWDD training techniques will be utilized for challenging behaviors. Coverage for other staff may be required, including at other locations. Participation in treatment plan development and operating a YAI vehicle for transportation may also be required.
