This role involves assisting individuals in maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities, upholding their personal rights, and providing emotional support. The Direct Support Professional (DSP) supports people to meet personal goals, engages in respectful communication, and facilitates activities that build community connections. Key responsibilities include the supervision, protection, and care of individuals, ensuring their health, wellness, and safety, and managing crisis situations. The DSP provides support in various settings according to individualized service and behavior support plans, utilizing core competencies. They ensure the implementation of person-centered plans, maintain a clean and safe therapeutic environment, and utilize safe handling procedures. Specific tasks include assisting with personal care and activities of daily living, administering medication, teaching skills, supporting advocacy, assisting with communication, facilitating ethical decision-making, preparing meals, and transporting individuals. The role requires developing an understanding of specialized clinical knowledge for specific needs and implementing Behavior Support Plans. Data collection, observation, and reporting of changes in behavior are crucial. The DSP is a member of a team, completes necessary trainings and certifications, and maintains documentation using electronic health records. They use foundational teaching skills and understand behavior as communication. Compliance with all regulatory requirements, including HIPAA, is mandatory. The DSP reports maintenance and safety concerns, consults with program leadership, and utilizes approved intervention techniques for challenging behaviors. They may provide coverage at other locations and participate in treatment plan development. For certain assignments, operating a YAI vehicle may be required.
