This role involves assisting individuals in maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities, upholding their personal rights, and providing emotional support. The Direct Support Professional (DSP) supports people to meet personal goals, engages in respectful communication, and encourages social connections within the community. Key responsibilities include the supervision, protection, and care of individuals, ensuring adherence to program guidelines, and facilitating learning in areas like fire safety. The DSP also manages crisis situations, ensures health and wellness, and provides support in various settings according to individualized service and behavior support plans. They are responsible for implementing person-centered plans, including Behavior Support Plans (BSPs) and Life Plans, and maintaining a clean, safe therapeutic environment. The role requires utilizing safe handling procedures and infection control protocols. Specific tasks include assisting with personal care, activities of daily living (ADLs), medication administration, teaching skills, communication support, meal preparation, and transporting individuals. The DSP will develop an understanding of specialized clinical knowledge for specific needs, implement Behavior Support Plans, collect and record data on behavior, and report any changes to the clinical or leadership team. Collaboration within a team is essential, involving feedback and communication of programmatic needs. The DSP must complete all necessary trainings and certifications, review communication logs daily, and maintain accurate electronic health records. They will use foundational teaching skills and understand behavior as communication. Compliance with all regulatory requirements, including HIPAA, is mandatory. Reporting maintenance and safety concerns is also a responsibility. The DSP will consult with program leadership and attend team meetings. Approved YAI and OPWDD training techniques will be used to respond to challenging behaviors. Coverage for other staff may be required, potentially at different locations. Participation in treatment plan development and operating a YAI vehicle for transportation may also be part of the role.
