This role involves assisting individuals in maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities, upholding their personal rights, and providing emotional support. The Direct Support Professional (DSP) will support people to meet personal goals, engage in respectful communication, and encourage social connections within the community. Key responsibilities include ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals, facilitating learning, and managing crisis situations. The DSP will provide support in various settings according to individualized service and behavior support plans, utilizing core competencies and adhering to OPWDD standards. This includes implementing person-centered plans, Behavior Support Plans (BSPs), and Staff Action/Life Plans. The role also requires maintaining a clean and safe therapeutic environment, utilizing safe handling procedures, and adhering to infection control protocols. Specific tasks may include assisting with personal care, ADLs, medication administration, teaching skills, communication support, meal preparation, and transporting individuals. The DSP will develop an understanding of specialized clinical knowledge for specific needs, implement Behavior Support Plans, collect and record data on behavior, and report any changes to the clinical or leadership team. Collaboration within a team environment is essential, as is completing all necessary trainings and certifications. Documentation is a critical part of the role, including reviewing communication logs, making entries in electronic health records, and completing other required paperwork accurately and on time. The DSP will use foundational teaching skills and understand behavior as communication. Compliance with all regulatory requirements, including HIPAA, is mandatory. Reporting maintenance and safety concerns, consulting with program leadership, and participating in team meetings are also key functions. The role may require the use of approved YAI and OPWDD training techniques for challenging behaviors and may involve providing coverage at other locations or assisting with transportation of individuals. Participation in treatment plan development may also be required.
