About The Position

Direct Care Staff (DCS) - Relief position in Tuscaloosa, AL, serving consumers with mental illness. This role requires effective group work, understanding of training methods for the developmentally disabled, and the ability to assist with mechanical devices for safe handling. The position involves direct client care, including bathing, feeding, dressing, and ambulation, as well as transportation, documentation, inventory, cleaning, and client training. Adherence to organizational policies, HIPAA, and safety standards is crucial. The role may require long hours and involves some risk due to potential aggressive consumer behavior. Physical presence onsite is essential.

Requirements

  • Must be able to work effectively in a group situation.
  • Must be able to work within the organization to serve the needs of consumers.
  • Excellent understanding of training methods used in working with the developmentally disabled required.
  • Must be able to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Must be able to negotiate several flights of stairs during a shift.
  • Must be able to complete training to operate/assist with a Hoya lift and other mechanical devices for safe handling of consumers.
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current driver's license and good driving record as defined by Indian Rivers' policy.
  • Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
  • Must be knowledgeable of and abide by HIPAA regulations with regard to protected health information.
  • Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees, consumers and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact.
  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, computer, copier, multi-line phone and fax machine.
  • Must be able to lift fifty (50) pounds and negotiate several sets of stairs in an eight (8) hour shift.
  • Must possess a valid Alabama driver's license.
  • Hearing and vision must be normal or corrected to within normal range.
  • Able to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with consumers with mental illness and/or developmental disabilities preferred.
  • One (1) year experience in a mental health setting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide transportation for consumers as needed for appointments, errands, and outings.
  • Use personal vehicle may be required.
  • Work assigned shifts, weekends, holidays, and overnight as scheduled.
  • Document BLS groups and all clinical notes in accordance with agency policies and within 24 hours.
  • Bathe, feed, dress, and ambulate clients to ensure proper grooming.
  • Conduct food inventory twice weekly and as assigned by supervisor.
  • Dispose of expired food.
  • Conduct supplies inventory.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, wipe down surfaces, general cleaning of facility, and all other janitorial duties assigned.
  • Conduct client trainings as assigned by supervisor.
  • Pick-up client prescriptions from pharmacy.
  • Accompany clients to appointments.
  • Ensure all receipts and monies are returned to supervisor immediately after outing(s).
  • Cook and provide meals according to diet and posted menu.
  • Maintain communication and awareness of current events by reading memos, e-mails, bulletin boards, and communication logs.
  • Work independently and/or with teams to complete assigned tasks accurately and in a timely manner with minimum supervision.
  • Support Organizational Code of Conduct, Standards Compliance, HIPAA and Security Programs.
  • Maintain the confidential nature of all consumer and Organization related activities.
  • Adhere to attendance and punctuality policy.
  • Comply with all standards related to safety and health.
  • Identify opportunities for improving the quality of services provided by the department and the organization.
  • All other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor or Executive Director.
