About The Position

Direct Care Staff (DCS) for Mental Illness Services in Tuscaloosa, AL. This full-time position involves providing direct support and care to consumers with mental illness and/or developmental disabilities in a residential facility setting. The role requires effective group work, understanding of training methods for the developmentally disabled, and the ability to assist with mechanical devices for safe handling of consumers. Responsibilities include transportation, documentation, personal care, inventory management, cleaning, client training, and meal preparation. The position also emphasizes adherence to organizational policies, HIPAA regulations, safety standards, and attendance policies. The role may involve long hours and carries some risk due to potential consumer behavior.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Current driver's license and good driving record as defined by Indian Rivers' policy.
Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
Must be able to work effectively in a group situation.
Must be able to work within the organization to serve the needs of consumers.
Excellent understanding of training methods used in working with the developmentally disabled required.
Must be able to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
Must be able to negotiate several flights of stairs during a shift.
Must be able to complete training to operate/assist with a Hoya lift and other mechanical devices for safe handling of consumers.
Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Must be knowledgeable of and abide by HIPAA regulations with regard to protected health information.
Physical presence onsite is essential.
Hearing and vision must be normal or corrected to within normal range.
Able to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

Nice To Haves

Experience working with consumers with mental illness and/or developmental disabilities preferred.
One (1) year experience in a mental health setting preferred.

Responsibilities

Provide transportation for consumers as needed for appointments, errands, and outings.
Use personal vehicle may be required.
Work assigned shifts, weekends, holidays, and overnight as scheduled.
Document BLS groups and all clinical notes in accordance with agency policies and within 24 hours.
Bathe, feed, dress, and ambulate clients to ensure proper grooming.
Conduct food inventory twice weekly and as assigned by supervisor.
Dispose of expired food.
Conduct supplies inventory.
Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, wipe down surfaces, general cleaning of facility, and all other janitorial duties assigned.
Conduct client trainings as assigned by supervisor.
Pick-up client prescriptions from pharmacy.
Accompany clients to appointments.
Ensure all receipts and monies are returned to supervisor immediately after outing(s).
Cook and provide meals according to diet and posted menu.
Maintain communication and awareness of current events by reading memos, e-mails, bulletin boards, and communication logs.
Work independently and/or with teams to complete assigned tasks accurately and in a timely manner with minimum supervision.
Support Organizational Code of Conduct, Standards Compliance, HIPAA and Security Programs.
Maintain the confidential nature of all consumer and Organization related activities.
Adhere to attendance and punctuality policy.
Comply with all standards related to safety and health by maintaining current TB Test, CPR/First Aid, CPI, and by reporting infections and on-the-job injuries in accordance with policy.
Identify opportunities for improving the quality of services provided by the department and the organization.
All other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor or Executive Director.
