About The Position

This position is responsible for operating a digital press, ensuring the correct paper and ink are used according to the job order. The role involves cleaning and maintaining the press, adjusting controls for ink volume, setting up the press for operation, and running proof sheets. The operator will examine proofs for quality issues such as leveling, ink volume variations, register slippage, offsetting, and color register, making necessary adjustments to the press controls, inking fountains, and automatic feeders. Additionally, the operator will repack cylinders and mix colors as needed, and make overlays for half-tone shades. While this role does not have formal supervisory responsibilities, the operator will be expected to instruct and direct a press helper.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively in groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Knowledge of Pace Manufacturing software.
  • Ability to stand.
  • Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision.

Responsibilities

  • Verifies size, color, and type of paper and color of ink from job order.
  • Cleans inking rollers with solvent and replaces them in press.
  • Adjusts controls to regulate volume of ink.
  • Adjusts delivery tapes, and positions and locks form (type setup or plate) on bed or cylinder of press.
  • Adjusts feed guides, grippers, and elevator, or hand-feeding press.
  • Starts press and runs off proof sheet.
  • Examines proof to determine off-level areas, variation in ink volume, register slippage, indications of offsetting, and color register.
  • Adjusts press controls, inking fountains, and automatic feeders, and repacks cylinder with overlay to equalize off-level.
  • Registers forms and mixes colors.
  • Makes overlay for half-tone shades.
  • Instruct the press helper in what needs to be done next and give directions at times.
