About The Position

The Digital Media Lab Specialist performs responsible technical duties in the troubleshooting, maintenance, and security of computer hardware and software used in the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library (JMRL) Central Library. Works under the general supervision of the Supervising Technology Services Librarian. The preferred hiring amount for this position is $20.99 an hour ($43,659.20 Annually). Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This full-time, non-exempt position offers a comprehensive benefits package, including 13 paid holidays plus one floating holiday, vacation and sick leave, health insurance with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, gym membership reimbursement, tuition assistance, and professional development opportunities. This position is also eligible for the following benefits: Defined Contribution 401a Plan: Employer makes fixed contributions to an individual account, which are invested, and returns are credited to the account. The account balance is used to provide retirement benefits. Vesting occurs at 33% after one year, 67% after two years, and 100% after three years of service. No salary contribution is required. Voluntary 457 Deferred Compensation Plan The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS; however, a Portability Agreement is available for eligible employees. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and proficiency in software applications and Microsoft operating systems, along with working knowledge of website design, content, and maintenance, and IT skills in hardware, operating systems, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and providing technical instruction.
  • OR Associate’s degree and 2 years of related experience, and knowledge of software applications and Microsoft operating systems, knowledge of website design, content, and maintenance, and IT skills and abilities related to hardware, operating systems, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and instruction;
  • OR High School diploma or GED and 4 years of related experience, and knowledge of software applications and Microsoft operating systems, knowledge of website design, content, and maintenance, and IT skills and abilities related to hardware, operating systems, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and instruction;
  • OR An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license and maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Thorough knowledge of computers including configuration, installation and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of software applications and Microsoft operating systems.
  • Knowledge of website design, content, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of library policies and procedures related to computer use and patron conduct.
  • Intermediate reading ability: Ability to read and understand written materials such as newspapers, technical journals, multi-step instruction manuals, and reference materials.
  • Basic writing ability: Ability to write simple letters, paragraphs and sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses. Maintains required records.
  • Advanced math ability: Ability to apply fundamental concepts of theories, work with advanced mathematical operations methods and functions of real and complex variables.
  • Intermediate communication skills: Provide and receive complex information. May include interactions that involve stressful, negative situations requiring significant tact and the ability to diffuse aggressive behavior and reach consensus. Elements of persuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation and understanding. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with staff, leaders, and the public. Ability to communicate IT information to non-expert staff and patrons.
  • General Direction independence and decision-making: Normally performs the job by following general instructions or established standard operating procedures and/or policies. There is some discretion when making decisions among a few easily identifiable choices of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties. Performance is reviewed frequently.

Responsibilities

  • Installs and maintains computer software and hardware used by Central Library.
  • Configures, installs, and troubleshoots library computers and printer hardware and software.
  • Analyzes and repairs hardware and software problems.
  • Monitors public use of Digital Media and Maker Space.
  • Assists with system administration of Linux webserver.
  • Provides training and assistance with website design, use of the digital media lab and makerspace, and other technical support to patrons and member clients/organizations.
  • Troubleshoots and conducts routine maintenance of equipment in the digital media lab and makerspace.
  • Serves as acting department head in the absence of the department manager.
  • Works a flexible schedule including days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of JMRL equipment, tools, and other resources, including work time.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned.
