About The Position

This co-op position aims to hire a current Mount St. Joseph University student eager to develop relevant and interesting stories to attract and engage outside audiences. The role will also assist with website updates as needed. Written content will be shared on web and social channels, with the goal of growing the Mount’s reach, enhancing its reputation, and gaining a competitive edge. The student will receive mentorship and coaching from the Director and the Vice President of Marketing & Communications within an award-winning Marketing team led by a former Brand President from Procter & Gamble.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled student at Mount St. Joseph University.
  • Must have completed prerequisites for co-op eligibility.
  • Ability to work on own initiative, independently, and to deadlines.
  • Well organized, punctual, and reliable.
  • Ability to communicate sensitively and tactfully, both orally and in writing, with individuals at all levels within the University.
  • Eagerness to develop writing skills to gain experience in a professional atmosphere.
  • Understanding of news writing and story structure.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Flexibility in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with AP Style Guide.
  • Experience using a content management system (CMS), such as WordPress, Squarespace, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Write news stories with headlines, interesting leads, and supporting details.
  • Present some stories in a narrative storytelling fashion, demonstrating feature article understanding.
  • Write news posts about various campus happenings as assigned.
  • Identify story leads on campus.
  • Submit stories in the back-end of the website for publication on the homepage and news section.
  • Maintain a professional and positive demeanor when communicating across campus.
  • Assist with proofreading print materials.
  • Execute webpage edits to www.msj.edu.
  • Add/remove bio pages for staff members in the directory.
