About The Position

The Diesel Mechanic Maintenance position is responsible for performing maintenance, preventative maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs on diesel-powered trucks, trailers, Tyson pickup trucks, and other company vehicles and equipment. This position helps ensure the reliability, safety, and efficiency of the transportation fleet while maintaining a safe work environment and adhering to all Tyson Foods policies and procedures. The Diesel Mechanic reports directly to the Sr. Shop Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Must have a valid drivers license.
  • Must have at least 6 months’ vehicle mechanic experience documented on application or resume.
  • Must possess mechanical aptitude and the ability to troubleshoot and repair diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
  • Must be able to safely operate maintenance tools and equipment and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Must be willing and able to perform the following: stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, crawl, and work in awkward positions for extended periods.
  • Must be willing and able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds as needed throughout the shift.
  • Must be willing and able to climb ladders and safely work underneath vehicles and trailers.
  • Must be willing and able to use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, jacks, lifts, and other maintenance equipment.
  • Must be willing and able to perform repetitive movements involving the hands, arms, shoulders, and back.
  • Must be willing and able to work in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, rain, and outdoor environments.
  • Must be willing and able to work around moving vehicles, mechanical equipment, noise, vibration, grease, oils, fuels, and cleaning chemicals.
  • Must be willing and able to wear required personal protective equipment.
  • Must be willing and able to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments as business needs require.
  • Must be willing and able to work in a fast-paced maintenance environment.
  • Must be willing and able to perform the physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Nice To Haves

  • Diesel experience preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required.
  • Previous experience as a diesel mechanic, diesel technician, fleet mechanic, or heavy equipment mechanic.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance programs, diesel engine diagnostics, brakes, air systems, suspension systems, electrical systems, trailer maintenance, hydraulic systems, and DOT inspections.
  • Experience in using computerized diagnostic equipment and maintenance documentation systems is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance on diesel trucks, trailers, pickup trucks, and other fleet equipment.
  • Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair diesel engines and related vehicle systems.
  • Perform oil changes, lubrication services, filter replacements, and fluid checks.
  • Repair and replace tires, brakes, suspension components, steering systems, and other mechanical parts.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical, charging, lighting, and starting systems.
  • Inspect and maintain trailer components, including air systems, suspension systems, and lighting systems.
  • Conduct vehicle inspections to ensure compliance with company standards and DOT requirements.
  • Utilize diagnostic equipment and tools to accurately identify mechanical issues.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, inspections, preventative maintenance activities, and parts usage.
  • Ensure all vehicles and equipment are maintained in a safe and roadworthy condition.
  • Respond to fleet breakdowns and perform emergency repairs when required.
  • Maintain shop equipment, tools, and work areas in a clean and organized manner.
  • Assist with inventory control and proper storage of parts, supplies, oils, and maintenance materials.
  • Follow all safety procedures, lockout/tagout requirements, and company maintenance practices.
  • Work collaboratively with fleet management, drivers, and other departments to support transportation operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
