About The Position

To perform maintenance and repairs, including troubleshooting and diagnostics, on a variety of diesel/gas vehicles and equipment. This role involves repairing, maintaining, and overhauling diesel and gas vehicles and equipment such as garbage trucks, vacuum trucks, tractors, and street sweepers. The mechanic will also troubleshoot and analyze vehicle problems, respond to road service calls, and use specialized tools for repairs. Additionally, the position assists in inventory management, record-keeping, and the lubrication analysis process. The mechanic will make recommendations on repair versus replacement, assist with budget preparation, and utilize electronic maintenance records. Participation in safety training and adherence to safety practices are crucial. The role also requires providing exceptional customer service and potentially reporting for emergency duty.

Requirements

  • Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license, including CDL clearance.
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Specialized training in mechanics, maintenance management, or a closely related field.
  • Three (3) years related experience and/or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have or be willing and able to obtain a South Carolina Class A CDL Permit within ninety (90) days of hire and full licensing within six (6) months of hire.
  • Knowledge of the construction, design and repair of a wide variety of conventional and specialized, light, medium and heavy automotive equipment, including gas and diesel engines.
  • Knowledge of standard automotive repair tools and equipment, and specialized tools utilized in the servicing of heavy/light, hydraulically operated diesel/gas powered equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulic components, electronics, vacuum systems, and compressed air systems.
  • Knowledge of the occupational and safety precautions associated with the repairs of equipment involved in handling solid waste.
  • Ability to troubleshoot or detect defective or improperly adjusted components in automotive equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and automotive diagrams.
  • Ability to understand and execute instructions given orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.
  • Skilled in the use and operation of modern standard and specialized tools, equipment and materials.

Responsibilities

  • Repairs, maintains and/or overhauls diesel and gas, standard and specialized vehicles and equipment including garbage trucks, vacuum trucks, tractors, lawn mowers, and street sweepers.
  • Services and repairs specialized systems including engines, brakes, transmissions, springs, wheels, hydraulics, fuel systems, air systems, and emission systems.
  • Troubleshoots, analyzes, and diagnoses a variety of vehicle problems.
  • Responds to road-service calls and promptly services and repairs disabled vehicles and equipment.
  • Uses specialized and power tools, including welding and fabricating tools, to make and complete repairs.
  • Assists in maintaining critical parts inventory, equipment maintenance records, and preventative maintenance program.
  • Requisitions parts, supplies, tools, and equipment.
  • Plays a vital role in the lubrication analysis process.
  • Makes recommendations regarding repair versus replacement based on cost and historical data.
  • Assists with budget preparation for expected repairs or maintenance.
  • Enters and interacts with work orders in the Fleet Management Software (FMS) using a handheld tablet or computer.
  • Participates in safety training and makes suggestions for safety improvements.
  • Works according to good safety practices and reports unsafe conditions or defects in equipment.
  • Reports all accidents and incidents, including near misses.
  • Follows safety rules and regulations and uses personal protective equipment.
  • Maintains prompt and regular attendance and adheres to City policies regarding absences and tardiness.
  • Provides exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.
  • May be required to report to the City’s Emergency Operations Center for emergency duty.
