About The Position

DeKalb is the headquarters of prominent businesses and organizations. As a Diesel Mechanic, you will be instrumental in promoting good government in DeKalb County. Duties include operating and using various machinery, equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies to complete work assignments; operating and maintaining maintenance equipment; maintaining a mechanics toolbox; and maintaining equipment-specific tools. You will perform scheduled preventive maintenance, including changing oil, hydraulic fluid, air filters, fuel filters, and other expendables as required. You will also inspect seals, hoses, and tires for wear or damage and arrange for replacement as needed. Additionally, you will perform equipment inspections, inspecting and testing all equipment systems, including drive train, engine operation, transmission operation, suspension, steering, brakes, hydraulics, electrical system, and HVAC. You will complete or revise work orders for repairs, obtain required parts, and inspect completed work. You will repair heavy equipment by gathering information from operator reports, equipment manuals, and fault codes; troubleshooting and diagnosing electrical, hydraulic, and engine problems using multi-meters, test lights, pressure gauges, flow meters, vacuum and compression gauges, etc.; identifying items and systems needing repair; completing required repairs; and ensuring equipment operation and performance is within specified limits. You will also weld and fabricate parts, weld broken parts, fabricate replacement parts, replace parts or structures to vehicles, and verify parts operate according to specifications. You will prepare and commission new equipment and accessories, completing records for new equipment, adding stencil numbers, and installing accessories such as fire extinguishers and first aid kits. Finally, you will decommission equipment by removing County decals, equipment, accessories, and other property, and ensuring equipment is ready for disposition.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED, with vocational training or technical training in automotive repair or a related field
  • Three years of automotive, heavy truck, or heavy equipment maintenance repair experience including one year at the journeyman level in the repair and maintenance of gas and diesel powered heavy trucks, road maintenance equipment, and other related equipment
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job
  • Possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license
  • Some positions may be required to obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL) appropriate for the level of equipment operated within six (6) months of starting employment in this classification
