About The Position

VIA Rail is undertaking ambitious projects to modernize its services and infrastructure, including a new train fleet and ongoing infrastructure improvements. This role contributes to the future of transportation in Canada and the collective effort in sustainable mobility. The Diesel Engine Mechanic will help ensure the reliability and safety of VIA Rail's national passenger rail fleet.

Requirements

  • A vocational diploma in heavy duty mechanics, diesel mechanics, automotive mechanics
  • Experience with diesel and/or internal combustion engines
  • Experience and/or certification in heavy rail equipment repair
  • Knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems

Nice To Haves

  • Journeyperson certification or Red Seal is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs on locomotives
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic failures
  • Use maintenance procedures, technical manuals, and tools to ensure safe and reliable operations
  • Ensure all work complies with maintenance programs and rail safety standards
  • Meet and exceed Transport Canada regulatory requirements

Benefits

  • Hourly wage: $38.49 to $46.43/hour
  • Shift premiums: evening ($1.50/hour), night ($2.00/hour)
