About The Position

The Department of Transportation is looking for a dedicated Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic eager to make a difference daily. In this job, you will help ensure that essential equipment is ready for use in all types of conditions. Your work will support safe travel and dependable public services across the region. This position focuses on maintaining and repairing a wide range of vehicles, construction equipment, and powered tools to support safe and efficient operations. You will play an important role in keeping essential machinery in proper working condition for daily and emergency use.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed.
  • Possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • Possession of an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
  • Employees must pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions.
  • Conditional offer of employment will require submission of criminal history reports.
  • Conditional offer of employment will require a medical examination and drug screening.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out skilled repairs on cars, trucks, tractors, construction machinery, and powered hand tools
  • Conduct routine servicing such as oil changes, diagnostics, tune ups, and part replacements across multiple vehicle systems
  • Complete official safety and emissions inspections, verify repair compliance, and document inspection results
  • Provide emergency road service and perform maintenance in field environments when needed
  • Maintain accurate equipment records and complete automotive reports and related documentation
  • Follow required safety procedures, report hazards, and support safe work environments for yourself and others
