Diagnostics Mechanical Engineer

Commonwealth Fusion Systems•Devens, MA

About The Position

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is assembling the high-field SPARC tokamak, designed to pursue net fusion energy and provide scientific data needed to complete the design of ARC. CFS is seeking a Diagnostics Mechanical Engineer to support the mechanical design and integration of approximately 40 diagnostic subsystems as they progress through design closeout, analysis, procurement, testing, and installation. The role will help complete designs for front-end, in-vacuum measurement devices, address engineering challenges during build and test, and design structural components for ex-vessel data transmission to diagnostic laboratories. The engineer will work within an integrated diagnostics team alongside fusion scientists and other engineers. CFS welcomes applications from senior and early-career engineers, including people making cross-industry career changes. The work takes place in a facility containing industrial hazards, and the role occasionally involves travel and nights, weekends, or on-call work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering field, such as mechanical, aerospace, civil, or nuclear engineering.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience designing and delivering mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering cradle-to-grave mechanical designs with nuanced environmental or performance requirements.
  • Experience designing for manufacturing and assembly and collaborating with partners to oversee or carry out integrated builds.
  • Bias toward action and a balance of engineering intuition and technical rigor to produce robust, simple designs efficiently.
  • First-principles engineering approach and ability to understand concepts and tradeoffs bridging engineering and physics.
  • Strong communication skills for gathering input and distributing information across partner teams.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to perform activities such as climbing, typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods.
  • Willingness to travel or occasionally work required nights, weekends, or on-call.
  • Ability to work in a facility containing industrial hazards, including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics.
  • Compliance with U.S. Export Control Laws concerning controlled or protected technologies or information is required; any employment offer is contingent on compliance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Siemens NX, Teamcenter, or Ansys for CAD, PLM, or analysis.
  • Experience with software development, particularly in Python.
  • Experience designing large equipment that requires lifting or rigging tools for assembly.
  • Experience designing systems for exposure to high stress, ultra-high vacuum, high temperature, high magnetic field, or radiation environments.

Responsibilities

  • Guide SPARC diagnostic subsystems through design closeout, testing, and procurement in collaboration with scientists, designers, analysts, and engineers.
  • Integrate technical input from team experts to ensure diagnostic designs can withstand SPARC’s operating environments and support its scientific mission.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing engineers on build and test strategies for complex integrated systems.
  • Support field builds to maintain quality and speed.
  • Design structural components associated with ex-vessel data transmission to diagnostic laboratories.
  • Contribute to a strong safety culture.
