About The Position

This role involves a comprehensive range of responsibilities within an interventional radiology setting. The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer will be responsible for patient preparation, operation of advanced imaging equipment, and providing primary assistance during complex interventional radiology procedures. This includes functioning as an Interventional Radiology (IR) Technologist and Circulator, managing sterile surgical setups, and maintaining the procedure room. Additionally, the role encompasses clerical duties such as patient scheduling and verification of medical information, as well as training and mentorship of students and other technologists. Equipment maintenance is also a key aspect of this position.

Requirements

  • Associate of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography from a CAAHEP-accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in a range of invasive cardiovascular procedures, including right and left heart catheterization (diagnostic and interventional), electrophysiology studies, catheter ablation, cardiac device implantation, intra-aortic balloon pump therapy, transeptal procedures, and intravascular/intracardiac ultrasound.
  • Current certification from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
  • Valid AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification.
  • Ability to pass a government background check/security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Independently prepare patients, examination rooms, and procedure tables using appropriate techniques classified as dirty, clean, sterile, or aseptic to ensure optimal conditions for interventions.
  • Set up and operate advanced imaging modalities, including angiographic systems, CT, and ultrasound, to accurately capture and present clinically significant findings, particularly when unexpected conditions or anomalies arise.
  • Execute complex, specialized roles as an IR technologist, providing assistance in all procedural aspects. This includes managing specific equipment and preparing and utilizing procedures-specific consumables, medications, and devices.
  • Act as the primary assistant during intricate IR procedures, encompassing both diagnostic and interventional arterial/venous interventions (e.g., transarterial chemoembolization, uterine fibroid embolization, pelvic congestion syndrome embolization, gonadal vein embolization, thrombolysis, thrombectomy, balloon angioplasty, stent and intravascular device implantation, fistulagram/shuntogram, transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, and foreign body retrieval) as well as non-vascular interventional tasks (e.g., gastrointestinal studies, urinary studies, drainage procedures, biopsies).
  • Function as the primary circulator during all cases, ensuring smooth procedural flow.
  • Prepare, organize, and maintain comprehensive sterile surgical setups. Maintain constant situational awareness during procedures, anticipate the interventional radiologist’s needs, and adhere to universal precautions while managing specimens, supplies, and equipment. Ensure a sufficient stock of sterile instruments, and oversee the cleaning and re-sterilization processes post-procedure. Monitor linen stocks and report any shortages promptly.
  • Keep the procedure room clean and orderly at all times.
  • Conduct clerical tasks such as triaging and scheduling patients based on physician requests. Explain procedures comprehensively to patients and prioritize critical and emergency cases, adjusting schedules as necessary. Collect relevant laboratory results to verify patient eligibility for examinations and ensure all accompanying paperwork—such as histories and physicals, allergy information, medication lists, lab values, and past studies/reports—are accurate.
  • Assist in the education and training of students and fellow military technologists in IR principles, procedures, capabilities, techniques, and equipment.
  • Perform operator-level maintenance and care of equipment, identifying needs for higher-level technical support as required.
