About The Position

The DG Specialist I is responsible for supporting day-to-day operations—shipment planning, documentation, carrier coordination, and compliance—while following SOPs to deliver safe, compliant, on-time service. Communicates clearly with customers and internal teams, applies the basics of 49 CFR, IATA, and IMDG, and knows when to escalate non-routine or complex cases. Detail-oriented, organized, and coachable, they maintain audit-ready records, work safely in warehouse and secured/TSA areas, and manage time well to meet cutoffs. This position is based in the Atlanta area; however, we are specifically seeking candidates located in or near Cartersville, White County, and surrounding North Georgia communities.

Requirements

  • 1 - 2 years experience in hazardous materials, dangerous goods, logistics, freight forwarding, or related shipping/receiving operations with exposure to DG tasks (classification, packing, marks/labels, or documentation).
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must have foundational working knowledge of DOT/49 CFR, IATA, and IMDG regulations.
  • Must be able to travel to customer locations as needed to support operational and compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Successful completion of IATA, IMDG, and 49 CFR training within 90 days of hire, with a minimum passing score of 90%.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with international trade and/or freight forwarding, preferred.
  • Experience with transportation or warehouse management systems (C2C, Business Central, or similar) preferred.
  • Exposure to international shipping and freight forwarding processes preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a point of contact for customers via email, phone, and on-site interactions regarding assigned shipments.
  • Travel to customer locations as required to support dangerous goods operations, including shipment review, coordination, inspections, or issue resolution.
  • Acknowledge and respond to customer communications in a timely and professional manner.
  • Manage assigned shipments and accounts in accordance with company procedures and service standards.
  • Assist with shipment planning and coordination for domestic and international movements.
  • Apply applicable regulatory requirements (49 CFR, IATA, IMDG) based on mode of transportation.
  • Classify dangerous goods using Safety Data Sheets (SDS), including UN/ID number, Proper Shipping Name, hazard class/division, packing group, quantity limits, and compatibility requirements.
  • Ensure proper marks, labels, and documentation are prepared and applied accurately.
  • Complete required checklists, job breakdowns, and work instructions for each shipment.
  • Coordinate packing, crating, and delivery schedules with warehouse and packing teams.
  • Coordinate carrier pickups, deliveries, and special handling requests.
  • Perform accurate data entry and maintain complete, audit-ready shipment files.
  • Assist with freight audit and billing preparation, including documentation review and reconciliation.
  • Support compliance with internal SOPs, customer instructions, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with team members to meet daily operational goals and deadlines.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by supervision.
