The Developmental Specialist is primarily responsible for supporting people to achieve their personal dreams and goals. The role involves assessing each person receiving services for their hopes, dreams, and desires and providing supports that facilitate achievement. This includes supporting individuals in developing relationships within their community and with their natural supports, and assisting them in participating fully in their community consistent with their interests. The Developmental Specialist ensures that the rights of each person receiving services are protected and promoted at all times, and assists individuals in developing advocacy skills, participating in advocacy efforts, and utilizing personal advocates. Support is provided as needed to meet the emotional, physical, and medical needs of each person supported. The role also involves facilitating person-centered, effective, positive relationships using positive approaches that promote self-determination in all areas of life. Input and recommendations are provided into assessment and planning processes, and the development of the individual’s plan. The plan is implemented fully, within the requirements of the service definition, and documented as required by the service definition and agency policy. Daily progress notes and communication logs are completed to assure appointments, goals, and interests are met. The Developmental Specialist assists people receiving services with the day-to-day operation of their home such as housekeeping, meal preparation, laundry, shopping, lawn care, vehicle cleanliness, and maintenance. Driving and travel are required, including arranging for or providing transportation to people receiving services. Assistance is provided with knowledge of emergency procedures and personal safety, utilizing effective judgment when dealing with safety issues, including but not limited to fire safety by conducting drills, inspecting equipment, and practicing safety procedures in the community. New staff and/or current staff may be assisted with orientation, mentoring, and training. Sleepover at a residential setting may be required. Attendance and active participation in meetings and training are required, as well as maintaining certification in all agency, state and federal training requirements. The role requires demonstration of knowledge of and compliance with all agency policies and procedures, as well as state and federal statutes and regulations related to specific program areas, and following service definition guidelines for services being provided. Other relevant responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor will also be completed. The definition of an Innovations direct care worker includes all workers required for compliance with, or delivery of, the relevant Innovations waiver service definitions and the delivery of a unit of Innovations services to individuals in the definition of direct care worker to be applied and shall include only caregivers who are contracted for the provision of services in a legally appropriate manner.
