About The Position

Spotsylvania County Public Schools' Office of Student Support Services is seeking a Developmental Support Specialist to provide specialized support to teachers and paraeducators of students accessing developmental delay programs (K-2) and early childhood (ECSE) programs in the county. This role serves as a member of an interdisciplinary team focused on providing appropriate educational programs for special needs students. The specialist will offer specialized support and consultative services to teachers, Student Assistance Teams (SAT), Child Study Teams (CST), and Individualized Educational Plan Teams (IEP) to address student needs within their educational settings. Additionally, the role involves assisting in the screening, evaluation, and recommendation of placements for students within the division’s special education program. The position requires staying current with developments in special education and demonstrating continuous professional growth, while adhering to all special education procedures outlined in the division's handbook and Virginia State Regulations. The role also includes developing and implementing professional development programs and coordinating Learning Support and Multiple Disabilities programs across the division.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Ability to obtain appropriate license(s) and/or endorsement(s) as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
  • An acceptable rating of prior teaching experience, as applicable.

Nice To Haves

  • Currently possesses a Virginia Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional License within a specific endorsement area(s).
  • Prior teaching experience within a public school system.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a member of an interdisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide appropriate educational programs for special needs students.
  • Provides specialized support to teachers at all levels who need assistance in meeting the needs of students with learning disabilities and challenges.
  • Provides specialized consultative support to Student Assistance Teams (SAT), Child Study Teams (CST), and Individualized Educational Plan Teams (IEP) to meet student needs in their educational settings.
  • Assists in screening, evaluating and recommending placements of students for the division’s special education program.
  • Keeps abreast of recent developments in education for special needs students and shows evidence of continuing professional growth.
  • Complies with all special education procedures from the division wide Special Education Handbook and the Virginia State Regulations Governing Students with Disabilities.
  • Develops and implements professional development programs as assigned.
  • Leadership and coordination of Learning Support and Multiple Disabilities programs across the division.
