About The Position

Corning Incorporated is hiring a Development Technician, Metrology at our technology site in Rochester, NY. This role typically works 40 hours per week with flex as needed. U.S. citizenship or U.S. person status is required for this position. Shape the future of advanced optical metrology as a Metrology Technician in Corning’s Advanced Optics group and the Advanced Optics surface finishing and optical fabrication development team. You will work closely with the optical finishing development team to develop new measurement protocols for advanced optical components and troubleshoot equipment during prototype testing. In this role, you will support optical measurement activities critical to the development of novel optical fabrication and metrology processes. Your work will help characterize optical surfaces, support method development, and keep Corning at the forefront of innovation in optical systems.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent with at least 2 years of hands-on experience in optical manufacturing and metrology, OR a 2-year technical degree (AAS), OR a bachelor’s degree in optical systems technology or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience operating and calibrating high-precision optical metrology equipment such as interferometers and profilometers
  • Experience documenting measurement results and procedures in a technical or manufacturing environment
  • Experience troubleshooting scientific or metrology equipment, including diagnosing issues and supporting minor repairs
  • U.S. citizen or U.S. person required

Nice To Haves

  • Experience operating and calibrating an atomic force microscope
  • Experience with optical surface cosmetic inspection
  • Experience using phase analysis software such as Zygo MetroPro, QED.Net Toolkit or similar metrology analysis tools
  • Strong hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and comfort working with math and geometry
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment with flexibility, attention to detail, and a strong safety mindset

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and advanced optical measurements on optical components and surfaces
  • Operate, maintain, and calibrate optical metrology equipment
  • Document measurement procedures, results, and observations with accuracy and consistency
  • Support development and validation of new measurement methods and protocols
  • Assist with instrument setup, troubleshooting, and minor equipment repairs
  • Analyze measurement data to help characterize optical surfaces and process performance
  • Partner closely with the optical finishing development team during prototype testing
  • Follow safety, quality, and data integrity standards in all lab and development work
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts in metrology methods and lab practices
