About The Position

This is a full-time, permanent, overtime-exempt position with an average expected work week of around 40 hours. Reporting to the Development Director, the Development Associate will be a key member of CBE’s Development Team. The Development Associate will be responsible for an active portfolio of foundation relationships; for leading and managing the creation of content for LOIs, proposals, and reports; and for coordinating the creation of budgets and other attachments. The Associate will provide support for other development tasks, such as managing grant requirements and participating in CBE’s Community Teams and Resource Mobilization (Fundraising) Team. The Development Associate will help CBE implement its Transformative Organizing Model by collaborating with other staff on grant items, contributing to grassroots fundraising activities and other development projects, and occasionally participating in program activities. In addition to the above, CBE has made a commitment to addressing anti-Blackness and white supremacy culture within our organization. The Development Associate will participate in CBE’s internal work to advance the Development team’s equity goals. CBE has four offices: Oakland and Richmond (Bay Area) in Northern California and Huntington Park and Wilmington (Los Angeles) in Southern California. Currently, most CBE staff are working remotely and/or working out of the office intermittently. The Development Associate can work remotely and is encouraged to occasionally work out of any of our offices.

Requirements

  • 2-3 years grant writing or equivalent professional writing experience
  • Demonstrated ability to be creative, flexible, well-organized and a self-starter
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, via email/Teams as well as more formal venues
  • Detail Oriented, ability to understand multiple sets of instructions provided in a variety of forms, including written, oral, and diagram, to ensure that final materials meet all requirements.
  • Ability to work in a team setting and willingness to work a flexible schedule
  • Ability to multi-task and follow through with the completion of multiple projects under the supervision of the Development Director
  • Committed and able to uphold high levels of accountability for self and for others
  • Ability to handle confidential donor information with sensitivity and integrity
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends when grant deadlines require flexibility.

Nice To Haves

  • Life experience in a community impacted by environmental racism
  • Background in grassroots community organizing for environmental justice, labor, or other relevant movement work
  • Individual donor giving experience
  • Community organizing, community teaching and training experience
  • Proficiency in the full suite of Microsoft Office programs, Office 365, Google, etc.
  • Familiarity with CRM software and grants tracking
  • Bilingual in Spanish.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the creation of written content for LOIs, proposals, reports, and other materials that speak directly to the unique interests of CBE and each of CBE’s funders.
  • Meet and work with program staff as necessary to update and create content for grants and key donor/funder communications.
  • Assist Development Team in tracking key funder information and next steps for cultivation, applications, and reporting, and keeping other staff apprised of this information.
  • Collaborate with the Development Director, program staff and the Director of Finance and Operations on the creation of project budgets, financial reports, and other financial attachments, as necessary.
  • Research, track and present new funding opportunities and assess alignment with CBE’s organizational needs and/or community teams’ activities and campaigns.
  • Organize funder site visits which include coordinating logistics and prepping program staff.
  • Support with maintaining relationships with foundations and assist with relationship building of key foundation staff and donors where applicable.
  • Attend Community Team meetings, Development Team, and other relevant meetings where applicable (Resource Mobilization Team, Communications Team, Finance Check-Ins).
  • Assist with CBE’s grassroots/individual donor fundraising efforts and other development activities and occasional program activities as necessary.
