About The Position

This position oversees teaching of the GED/Adult Basic Education classes in the content of mathematics, science, language arts, and social studies as deemed appropriate to the inmate population for the Detention Services Bureau of the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office. This position works under the general direction of the Detentions Services Coordinator and Detention Services Administrative Manager.

Requirements

  • General working knowledge and understanding of current teaching theories, concepts and practices related to adult basic education.
  • Knowledge of High School Core Curriculum.
  • Knowledge of mental/emotional disabilities and adaptations.
  • Knowledge of learning disabilities and adaptations.
  • Knowledge of English as a Second Language /Adult Basic Education adaptations.
  • Knowledge of GED testing requirements and state regulations.
  • Ability to motivate inmates towards obtaining their educational goals.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Agency rules and regulations, policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Ability to operate computers and commonly used computer software programs, as well as any other office equipment or software programs as required by the position.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, fellow workers, volunteers and the general public.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in routine and emergency situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action.
  • Ability to exercise tact, courtesy and firmness in frequent contact with inmates and volunteers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, detention staff, inmates and the general public.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with all staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written English.
  • Must possess CPR and First Aid certification within the initial status period.
  • Must possess a high degree of honesty, integrity, and high moral and ethical standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Current Colorado educator licensing or equivalent certification from another state.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years teaching experience in a correctional setting.
  • Master’s Degree in Adult Education.
  • Proficient in Spanish.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees and administers the GED and Adult Basic Education (ABE) program, including curriculum delivery, student participation, and educational outcomes for the inmate population through tablet-based learning platforms.
  • Coordinates Spanish GED preparation, assessment processes, and English language proficiency programming to support diverse learner needs.
  • Establishes and administers assessment procedures to evaluate student readiness for GED testing and program advancement.
  • Serves as the primary educational liaison for students eligible for services under IDEA and ECEA, ensuring compliance with applicable Colorado state law.
  • Oversees the management, accuracy, confidentiality, and retention of educational records in accordance with policies and regulations.
  • Develops, monitors, analyzes, and reports program performance metrics, participation data, testing outcomes and other educational statistics to support operational decision making.
  • Coordinates procurement of educational materials, instructional resources and programs supplies, as needed.
  • Evaluates, manages, and recommends educational technology, software platforms, and learning resources, to support program effectiveness and inmate achievement.
  • Follows and supports the mission, values, organizational philosophies and principles, code of conduct, and policies and procedures of the Sheriff’s Office.
  • Interacts effectively with others.
  • Is committed to a high standard of safety laws and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.
  • Maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as determined at the Sheriff’s Office discretion.
