About The Position

Under the direction of the Corporal, Sergeant, and Lieutenant, performs a variety of work as assigned in a wide range of areas focused on the supervision of detainees. The role is responsible for maintaining order and security through the fair and impartial application of Luna County Detention Center policies and procedures, and accepted security and supervisory practices. The goal is to maintain the highest level of security possible while ensuring the safe and humane treatment of all detainees, including the protection of their rights within the facility. This role involves communicating effectively with a varied population of offenders, providing supervision during various detainee activities, maintaining security of assigned areas, monitoring detainee well-being, releasing detainees according to procedures, assigning and directing detainee work, completing paperwork, responding to emergencies, and operating various equipment. The position requires working a variety of rotating shifts and may perform other duties as assigned or required. The Academy Cadet role involves intensive training in classroom instruction and rigorous physical training to prepare for the Detention Officer duties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with no restrictions.
  • Must pass a written test.
  • Must pass an oral interview.
  • Must pass a background investigation.
  • Must pass a medical exam post-offer of employment.
  • Must pass a drug screen post-offer of employment.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret law enforcement and judicial records.
  • Ability to present information logically and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to respond to questions from supervisors, peers, professionals, detainees, and the general public.
  • Knowledge of detention operations, services, and activities.
  • Knowledge of adult detention standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of comprehensive detention programs.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, and procedures applicable to holding facilities and victim's rights.
  • Knowledge of AFIS and Offender Management Systems.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies, their functions, jurisdiction, and relationship to detention.
  • Knowledge of computer equipment and software for spreadsheets and databases.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis, reach methods, and report presentation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify appropriate solutions, and project consequences of proposed actions.
  • Ability to make sound judgments and use discretion in applying and interpreting policies and procedures.
  • Ability to plan, assign, direct, and evaluate the work of employees.

  • Ability to learn the use and care of weapons (including firearms) and restraint and self-defense tactics.
  • Ability to use sufficient physical force when required.
  • 1-Mile run within 15:00 minutes.
  • 300-Meter run within 75 seconds.
  • 18 minimum push-ups in a 1-minute time limit (male and female).
  • 20 minimum sit-ups in a 1-minute time limit (male and female).

Responsibilities

  • Supervises detainees within assigned areas, including during meal service, security checks, medication distribution, and searches.
  • Maintains order and security through fair and impartial application of policies and procedures.
  • Ensures safe and humane treatment of all detainees and protection of their rights.
  • Communicates effectively with a diverse population of offenders.
  • Provides supervision of offenders within the housing areas of the jail.
  • Responsible for general detainee behavior in assigned duty stations.
  • Directly supervises and escorts detainees within the secured perimeter of the jail.
  • Patrols and maintains security of designated areas of the facility.
  • Controls traffic to and from specific areas.
  • Conducts physical searches of detainees and cells.
  • Monitors detainee well-being and summons medical aid.
  • Communicates with and assists medical staff.
  • Releases detainees and their property according to established procedures.
  • Assigns and directs work on detainees.
  • Completes detention center paperwork accurately, including booking, release records, reports, logs, requests, memos, and rosters.
  • Accesses information from computer systems for requests from other agencies.
  • Responds to emergencies such as detainee assaults, fires, riots, disturbances, explosions, natural disasters, and hostage situations.
  • Uses appropriate levels of force through physical management of combative, violent, hostile, and assaultive offenders when necessary.
  • Operates equipment including computers, printers, FAX, fingerprint machines, physical restraint devices, radios, fire extinguishers, intercom systems, and telephones.
  • Works a variety of rotating shifts and may perform other duties as assigned.
  • Undergoes intensive training as an Academy Cadet, including classroom instruction and physical training.
  • Learns to provide for the safety, security, and welfare of detainees, fellow officers, staff, and the public.
  • Directly supervises detainees and engages in all functions related to their welfare, safety, and security of the housing unit upon successful completion of training.
